I am writing a script where we can update Orca and Brltty if we want
from the official web sites. But I like to do an apt-get update and
apt-get upgrade to ensure we have all the newest packages. How in
Python do I check to ensure that these commands have completed
properly?

Hi Scott, I don't know how to do this in python, but in bash it is very simple - just have a look at one of the easy-install scripts in the /usr/share/vinux/EasyInstall/ - are the packages available as .deb files or as source?  I look forward to seeing your script.

Tony the brltty is deb and the Orca is upstream but the reason for
doing this is so that if someone who is new or even experienced does
not have enough time to set these up it would be done automatically.
I also have in the near future a script which I want to do for
updating Vinux to the latest release. This way we don't have to grab
a disk iso every time. Also as you saw I am working on mirroring now
is some one in charge of mirroring? If I get this through then we'll
need to have the person who mirrors contact oper...@cs.umn.edu and
just let them know when the first mirror which I am hoping will be
Vinux 3.1. I'll probably know more next week but please put me in
touch with our mirroring people. In fact, I would suggest having a
mirroring list. As soon as I can get my system up and working I would
love to hold the Vinux mailing lists on my server. I can spread the
servers to because I have a lot of machines and hard drives here.

Hi Scott, there is no-one in charge of mirroring per se - I tend to coordinate the mirrors by sending out a message so people can start to mirror from the vinux.org.uk website - I upload to two other hosts using FTP but everyone else in charge of their own server - I like the hosts to be independent in case someone is ill, or is unavailable for a while. The Vinux mailing lists are just google groups - which makes administration very simple. So I would be happy to discuss any of these issues with you, and if you want to get involved or take on some responsibilities that would be great.

Hi Tony,

Yes I would love to help anywhere I can. I really believe in this
project and what is going on with it. This is the greatest thing
since sliced bread. Grin! So whatever I can provide or help with I
will certainly do. Now when you say that people mirror are there some
people that have their own servers who are mirroring too then? If so
then how does one get involved I am actually in the process of setting
up a DNS server so that I can get everything going on the Net so I
can't do it right at the moment but I would be happy to help in any
way possible.

Hi Scott , it is very simple, people who are willing to host Vinux simply download it from one of the existing mirrors (use use wget to download it straight to their servers) and then send me the direct URL - I then add that to the list of mirrors on the website.

Hi there everyone,

I have a couple of questions.

Firstly, I am using Orca 2.31.91. I notice whenever I reboot that the
voice settings are set really fast is there a way to fix this? I go
in to Orca Settings and slow it down and Apply and Okay but it still
doesn't work.

Secondly, this is my first time setting up wireless on a Linux box is
there a good tutorial to teach me or can someone please give me steps
on how to do this.

Hello Scott,

You probably will have to acquire the wifi drivers for your computer.

Do do this go to Menu / System / Administration / Additional Drivers

This has just changed from "Hardware Drivers" - so depending on your system you will find either of the two menu items.

Our you can use Control plus Alternate plus lower case t to open gnome-terminal and then type in:

sudo jockey-gtk

And this will start the drivers program.

Once you have installed the drivers you will probably have to reboot since some are kernel modules.

If your wifi is visible and not secured with WEP or WPA you will automatically connect.

If your connection is encrypted, you will have to specify which connection you want to connect to, and give the encryption key.  If the connection is hidden you will have to give the name of the connection also.

Someone else will have to tell you the key strokes to get to the nm-applet in the lower right corner of the screen.  Tony told someone a week ago, and I have forgotten it already.

Best wishes,

control+alt tab till you get to "bottom panel" actually it will say bottom
expanded edge panel I think, and then you can just tab with out using the
mod keys alt and ctrl, or I use arrows.
Usually the connections applet is the last one on the right, before you
get to some thing that says panel...probably the notifications panel in
a stock fresh Vinux install.
you should use control f1 to see what each icon is, and sometimes you
will be luck and these labels will stick, and in other installations
they are only good for one read. you also can enter on an icon to see
what is is and then use exit to close it...think that usually closes them,
if not close it with alt f.
then when you have the connections applet or icon if you prefer to call
it that, you can connect and configure with options found by doing the
equivilent of right and left clicking/ctr f10 andshift f10.
I am writing this in a console, so hang on and I'll check more...
That is shift f10 to deal with enabling network, and you can edit
connections there as well. Enter on the icon and you can choose between
various connections and enable or disable them as well.
Play around with these options on all of the icons and panel appletts to
see what you can do there. Basically you can control how the panel and
applets herself appear with control f10.

8. How do I connect to a wireless network?

There are two different ways to connect to a wireless network. The normal way is to navigate to the panel by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Tab, press Tab twice and you should land on the wireless icon. Press enter to open the list of available networks, select the one you want and press enter. You will then be asked for the encryption key if one is required. The other way is to Launch Ceni which is a text based Network Manager. You can use this to manually enter all of the required details and connect to a wireless network. If you are using Speakup in a console session this is really the only option. If for any reason your wifi card is not detected you should connect to the internet using an ethernet cable and then run the Hardware Drivers application on the Administration menu. This will attempt to detect and download the required drivers for your wifi card, after it is finished you should reboot the computer. In the unlikely event that this does not detect and configure your wifi card you contact members of the Vinux Support Forum/Mailing List for further advice! to slow down the orca speech rate you can press insert+down a few times it is faster than opening the preferences - insert+up will speed up the voice.

This is not exactly the problem I am having. What happens is I set
any parameters in Orca and when I reboot they do not stick. I do
through the Orca Preferences dialog box. I am just wondering if I
need to erase the settings in /home/scott/.orca and then set Orca up
again?

You can dom this by running: orca -t - but I think this will delete many of the Vinux Orca settings and keybindings - not sure though!

Scott, sounds like you just hit apply, and then did not enter on OK, or maybe visa versa. You need to first make changes, and then enter on apply, and after that tab twice and enter on OK.
