ATTENTION - Vinux Radio Amateurs - and others interested in radio software:

The Subject says most of it.  Off topic but useful.  Best of all to the "minority" operating system users, it supports Windows, Mac and Linux.

Have one of those new radios that needs to be programmed?  The small transceivers can be a real pain in the computer port <grin>.

This software gets a plug because it does the job for many, many radios and does it without cost to you.

CHIRP

http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Home

From the Web Site:

CHIRP is a free, open-source tool for programming your amateur radio. It supports a large number of manufacturers and models, as well as provides a way to interface with multiple data sources and formats.

Windows

Note that only Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7 are supported

Linux

Most modern distributions should have almost everything required to run chirp. Make sure you have python-serial and python-libxml2 packages installed.

For more information about using CHIRP under Linux, see the Running Under Linux page

Mac OS

MacOS users must install the KK7DS Python runtime before the application will execute. This only needs to be installed once.

Vinux Users who like amateur radio could add this ppa for latest amateur radio programs.

In terminal past this line and when prompted press ENTER.

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-hams-updates/ppa

Something that may be worth noting is how well it works with the different screenreaders, orca and speakup in linux, if this beasty is able to work via the command line and wen eyes, jfw or NVDA on windows. I can say that at least from what I've seen, it does not work well with NVDA, but that may be do to error on my part.

Take care.

OK, Jeremy,

Try it and tell us how it works.

Thanks for the suggestion and for volunteering.

Not sure if I'd call it volunteering, but I'll do my best. I can at least give it a shot on the linux side and as I've mentioned, with NVDA. I'm guessing that it works at least somewhat with jfw though, as I've come across articles on using it with a screenreader. All the same though, if it works on linux, either from the command line or what's available to us so far with orca, that's a huge plus.
As always, thanks David for pointing out yet another neat peace of software.

Take care.
