Hello List,

I’m using alpine for a few weeks now. I have noticed that messages in my INBOX are present for the day and gone the next day. Even if some messages are flagged as ‘new’, they disappear. Where do they go?

If I mark some messages for deletion, and expunge them, where do they go?

The strange thing is that the first 3 Inbox messages are old (going back to June 26th). All new messages disappear. Maybe I unknowingly checked or unchecked a box

in the Settings | Configuration screen.

Initially, there were only three alpine folders:

   Inbox, Sent and Saved.

I created one called ‘trash1’ and put it into the settings | configuration line:

  Trash folder =trash1

Yesterday's messages are no whare to be found.

The only way to keep messages is to save them to other folders.

Any explanation will be appreciated. Thanks.

Peter

Hi,
Deleted messages are deleted, so they are gone. They are only deleted if
you mark them with d while in inbox.
There is a setting in your pine config file for a file where the messages
which you have already read is moved to when you exit pine.
New/unread messages will stay in inbox until you either delete or read
them.
HTH, Willem
ps. pine was the old name of alpine.

Thanks Willem,

I used your response to solve one issue but another begs further questioning.

I am using the alpine SETUP| Config screen, not the pine config file.

On the issue of the moving of all non-new inbox messages, I created an alpine folder ‘Read1’.

The Config screen line is:

  Read Message Folder = Read1

Now, on quitting alpine, these inbox messages are moved to the read1 folder.

On the other issue, what is the trash folder used for? Initially, The Config screen has:

Trash Folder = <no value set: using ‘Trash’>

I created a folder ‘Trash1’ and added it to the line:

  Trash Folder = Trash1

If the configuration makes reference to a Trash folder, then why? No deleted/expunged messages are going into Trash1. What should go into trash if not deleted messages?

Thanks,

Peter

Hello,

One can select all of a folder’s messages with the semi colon character. The ‘x’ on each message line indicates this.

The command ‘d’ or ‘s’ applies only to the current line. Is there a way to apply the delete or send command to all the selected messages? If not, what is the purpose of being able to select all?

Thanks,

Peter

Use the a after you have selected the messages.
A for apply then allows you to delete e.g. the selected messages.
