I see I last posted these in the first week of December for the record.
Basically you want to install dropbox as if you had no gui.
There are instructions on the dropbox website and many other sites that give the method to do these headless installs.
Do not try yp run the whole thing as one command as is shown on the dropbox site and some other places I've seen.
There was a no longer valid tar option in those instructions as well.
The below is for 64bit Linuyx installations.
wget -O - "
https://www.dropbox.com/download?plat=lnx.x86_64" | tar xz
I do not have the url for the 32bit version handy right now, but either find it on the website, or try changing the x86_64 to i386 and see if it works.
When the command finishes running start the dropbox daemon from a log-in console, not the terminal that opens with control alt t!
./.dropbox-dist/dropboxd
should do the trick.
This will open up a dialog where you will see a very long url you must paste in to a GUI browser such as firefox. It does not have to be on the same
computer that you are linking to dropbox.
Now dropbox will start syncing.
To get full integration with nautilus you install nautilus-dropbox with your favorite installation method, e.g.,
sudo apt-get install nautilus-dropbox
I'd wait till everything finished syncing just because, but this should not be necesary.
There is a seperate dropbox package that integrates with caja for the mate desktop, and I wrote about how to use droppuburl with pcmanfm and other file
managers that do not have a dropbox package of their own.
I'm running this on vinux5/no problem, and installed to three or four other distros using the headless method.
Starting dropbox the first time from a console and not a terminal emulator is necesary. In case you are not regularly using consoles with speakup here
are the instructions for doing this that have been posted here regularly.
Open a terminal with control alt t or from an applications menu.
Then enter the following command in the terminal.
sudo speechd-up
Press enter, type your password when requested, press enter again, and go to a console. You can open up to six consoles by default. They are accessed
with control alt f1, control alt f2, up to control alt f6.
They can be opened in any order, and once you are in one you no longer need to use the control key to move between it and other consoles, open, i.e.
l;ogged in to, or not. There is no speech until you log in to a console, so let's say you go to the first console with control alt f1.
Type your user name, press enter, type your password, and press enter again. You should have speech with in a second or 2 in most cases, but if you have
just started vinux and the desktop is not talking yet, or you have a lot going on, programs working, then there may be a bit of a delay, especially on
slow machines.
I automate the whole processby adding a command to start speechd-up to startup programs, and make an exception in /etc/sudoers so that no password is
required to run it. This way all I have to do is log in to my consoles. The method for adding a program to automatically startup when you log in varies
a bit between desktops, i.e. gnome, mate and unity, and one must add an entry for each of the desktops one uses to get automatic console speech in that
environment.
Actually, I'm not sure if I did anything to get speechd-up to start in gnome, so maybe configuring it in unity got it working in gnome as well, or I
just forgot setting it up in gnome...smile. I do know I set it up seperately in mate on my Viux box.
I hope I can find some time to work on the wiki soon, but not likelyto be able to this week.
HTH.
