Hello,

When I tried to install lynx with the suggested package name :

  $ sudo apt-get install lynx-cur

I get:

Package lynx-cur is not available but it is referred to by another package.

This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source.

Error: package lynx-cur has no installation candidate.

And when trying to install mutt I get:

Error: unable to locate package mutt.

There are other familiar packages that I cannot install.

Hi Peter,
I can install both packages.
Could you please try sudo apt-get update and if no errors are received try to install both packages again.

Thanks
Rob

I found too many useful console packages were missing in Ubuntu, some like elm were very difficult to build from source.

lynx-cur is only available for trusty.   I am sure regular lynx is available.

If the lynx-cur from trusty wont install, try the package from Debian.

You can use gdebi to install a Debian deb file.

Ubuntu has been dropping some console applications since it dropped cli version back in Sarge Ubuntu.

Hello,

I now have a problem with this Vinux 5 beta 32 bit version.

After booting, I have no connection. When I try to go through the menu (with alt+F1), to select the network, the menu items are followed by the words:
  "not running"

One item in the menu list sounds like:
  ubuntu 1 not running

I then reboot and before entering the password, I tab to the session button. This time there are no buttons for Gnome and Mate.

There is a back button and another for what sounds like:
  ubuntu 2d

I have no network connection and the menu items are not running. Otherwise I have the desktop and I can go to the terminal.

Hi,
it sounds like you are actually using a Vinux 4 image, can you check if you have console speech by default and the version reported at login or in /etc/issue

Thanks
Rob

Hello Rob,

I packed it in last night and tried again this morning, to bring up Vinux 5 beta. It is ok now.

David mentions difficulty installing lynx-cur.
I don't know what is gdebi.

My goal is not to go to lengths to install the familiar packages because I want to use them.
I'm testing what worked before.

The existing Vinux users will do what they are used to doing when they switch to the new Vinux 5.

If I type:
  $ lynx

and I am told to install the package by typing::
  $ sudo apt-get install lynx-cur

I expect it to work. We are used to using apt-get.

If it doesn't work now, then:

1) this is temporary and it will be fixed.
or
2) things have changed and we need instructions on what to do.

Hi Peter,
no probs.
Did you sudo apt-get update
Your system automatically updates the package lists a couple of times a day, I suspect that was the problem.
You didn't actually say if you were able to install the packages now.

Thanks
Rob

Hello Rob,

Sorry for my rushed response. I sent my report just before breakfast and then remembered that I didn't use:
  $ sudo apt-get update

That did the trick. I have now installed lynx using lynx-cur. mutt is also installed.
