Hello all.
I managed to wipe my hard drive the first time I tried to write this to
a usb device. I dd'ed it the sda drive, so I had to download it again to
a slower box.
The md5sum matches. zsync says I have it all.
I have made two usb devices and burned it to DVD, but on 3 different
boxes it runs for about 10 seconds from the manufacturers splash screen,
and starts throwing errors.

The errors are all below. I also have an Ubuntu 14.04.3, dated 30150805,
about 3 weeks old. It brings up the first 3 lines, but goes om to a live
install with no problems.

vinux 5.0 goes on to produce all these errors and goes no further.

[ 4.053112] ACPI PCC probe failed.
[ 6.0178631] sd 4:0:0:0: [sdc] No caching mode page found
[ 6.017884] sd 4:0:0:0: [sdc] assuming drive cache: write through

BusyBox v1.21.1 (Ubuntu1:1.21.0-1Ubuntu1)built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

(Initranfs) mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on //filesystem.squashfs failed:
no such device
Can not mount /dev/loop0 (cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on
//filesystem.squashfs

If I hit enter at this point I just get (initramfs) repeated each time.

This happens on a Pentium 4 @ 3.6Ghz, a Pentium D @ 3.2 Ghz, and an i7 @
3.2 Ghz. All 3 have at least one of the previous image, the i7 had 4 or
5 on 2 drives, but only 1 grub, naturally on the Big sda drive.

I have run this initramfs error past Google, nobody seemed to have
answers, and it was all pre Precise.

Is this image working normally for others? Have I missed something I
should have seen?

Any clues, comments would be most appreciated.

Bill,

I am running it from USB 3 USB stick.  Works fine for me.

I do not have an extra hard drive to install it to.

Thanks David.
As I said, I ran md5sum and it matched, ran zsync (twice) . This morning
I installed Ubuntu 14.04.3 to the i7, downloaded the vinux .iso again
and put it on a DVD. The Md5sum matched, again, and it loaded to a live
install, now waiting for a restart after installation.

I guess the main thing I learned is that the md5sum is not in-fallible!
Oh yeah, and also , to read the dd command BEFORE pushing the enter key!
Mind, I haven't done this since about the same stage of Vinux 4.0.

Thanks again David,

Bill

I found on Arch Linux which I used to make a USB I had to use sudo to give the command.  I guess the USB is owned by ROOT when it mounts.

There are quirks like that in most systems, in Arch Linux to set up hplib you have to run hp-setup as root to install sometimes - even though you get a warning not to use root.

Brother! The details drive me batty.

Hello testers, Vinux 5 beta 2, AMD 64 test report

This time I installed the AMD 64 bit version of Vinux 5 beta 2, from a DVD.

I don’t know if some of the changes or improvements that I observed, are only in the latest 64 bit version. They were not in the 2 earlier 32 bit versions that I tested a few weeks ago.

I installed the latest Vinux 5 (downloaded August 23rd) to the entire disk, with a password required.

Here are my observations and 2 questions.

the install process.

Observation 1

There is still one install frame that goes silent and Orca cannot be restarted. This occurred on the frame that is asking for the name and password entered twice. After typing the first password I tabbed to the reenter the password field but Orca went silent.

To get Orca back, I used my previous techniques of assuming that I was on a button so I pressed the space bar. With no audio response, I then tabbed and hit the space bar a few times. It must have been the back button that was highlighted because I did go back and Orca came alive. I could then continue the install process with Orca.

After Installing.

Observation 2

Now, the log in frame is heralded with 3 notes. Sometimes, Orca announces all of the following:

  Screen reader on

  Login frame

  Enter password for Peter

Usually all I hear is:

  Screen reader on

Using the super+alt+s key brings up the entire prompt.

Observation 3

There is no longer a welcome tune when the desktop comes up.

Observation 4

I can now access the Gnome and Mate desktops but there is no announcement that the desktop has come up.

With Gnome and Mate all I hear is:

  Screen reader on

Orca does not appear to be there with Gnome.

Only when the Unity desktop comes up do I hear:

  Screen reader on

  Desktop frame

Use the arrow keys … for the menus, use alt+F1

Observation 5

In Unity, I sometimes hear the muffled noise that Rill mentioned. To me, it sounds like an external microphone is bumped or something is being scraped over its mouthpiece.

Question 1

Is there an easy way to shutdown?

I cannot find a “shutdown” in the Unity and Mate menus. In Gnome, if alt+F1 is bringing up the menu, Orca is not responding.

The Old Unity (in Vinux 4) had a few side-by-side menus with “shutdown” in one of them.

I find that the easiest way to shutdown, (in all 3 desktops) is to go to the terminal with ctrl+alt+t and recall:

  $ sudo poweroff

Or

  $ sudo reboot

Question 2

Is there a way to switch desktops from the desktop? I can only choose the session button in the log in frame. If there is

no log in prompt, then how do we switch to another desktop?

Maybe the lack of the welcome tune or Orca not talking is bit rate or computer dependent.

Perhaps others have different experiences.

Hi Peter,
thanks for the detailed feedback.
The image you refer to is the one labelled from the 18th or 19th.
The desktop sound or lack of we have fixed, should be done in the next image when we run them.

In Unity Alt F10 and down arrow should be the menu with log out, restart, shut down etc, if not try Alt F10 then left arrow and down.

For Mate, Alt F1 bringing up the Applications menu,, this is menu 1 of 3.
Arrowing right will show the Places menu then the again to the right showing the menu with shutdown at the bottom.
If you do not hear any speech feedback after hitting enter for log out or shutdown just hit enter to confirm.

Gnome I believe you have to go to the top panel possibly with Control Alt Tab then find the power menu, slightly longer than the simplicity of Unity we are used to.

To switch desktops is pretty easy.
From the log in screen on your password prompt push Tab.
You should hear a session chooser button or something similar.
Here you can choose the Desktop environment for the user and push Space on.

Alternatively if you had more than one user on the system from the Unity menu you where you see log out, shutdown etc you will also see your other usernames on the system.
Choose one of those and a second X session will be launched on the next available tty.
For example if Peter isl ogged in to Unity on tty7, i.e Control, Alt F7.
If you choose Rob from the Unity System menu which you may have configured for a Mate desktop, that will be available on Control, Alt, F8.

THanks for the detailed Email.

Kind regards
Rob
