Hey folks.
Further to my mail the other day, there are new images up, as some people reported boot problems. It was likely that something in the proposed repositories was breaking something, and since the new graphics stack is now in updates, the proposed repository has been disabled, which is how it will stay.

Enjoy and please continue to report your findings.

Please test the latest image.
We are considering this a beta as we believe what we have set out to
achieve has been done.

Keyboard shortcuts are working, tips fixed, workspaces enabled amungst
other things.
Please give feedback on this list.
We would rather not have to support this before it is released.

Thanks
Rob and Luke.

I installed it. My installation scenario is unchanged: I could not use
wireless; orca goes silent after disk partitioning and some time later
the keyboard selection screen speaks when I ask it to.
I could log into both mate and gnome.
The speech in the console using speechd-up is quite solid.
It is quite choppy and what I call mushy in the gui, that is, there are
breaks, hard to understand speech and a static sort of sound.
I had no trouble connected to a network using the gnome top panel.

Hi,
the situation when eSpeak gets mad under GUI and starts to chop-off
parts of the speach or to speek really fast on my machine happens only
after I use console speech for some time.
Sometimes, when I log-off all my consoles and kil speak-up - the GUI
speech goes to normal.
I suspect there is some conflict between speechd-up and Orca, fighting
for speech-dispatcher, or a pulseaudio problem, though I thought this
was a known problem.
Aside from my encoding issues, this is the second reason I don't use the
console very often, but the terminal instead.
I'm using Vinux 5 installation from October 2014, upgraded through
apt-get yesterday.

Best wishes,
Zahari

sudo speechd-up from your desktop.

Hi Zahari,
I would be checking your top output for processes that may be using high
CPU usage.
Also the best way for you to help as a tester is to isntall from scratch.
That is the only way you will fix the keyboard shortcuts and other fixes
we roll out.

Thanks
Rob

Hi Rill,
what hardware are you using.
Which partitioning scheme do you choose at install?
I have noticed after selecting use entire disk and choosing to continue
with writing changes.
That there is a delay, which pushing space seems to fix.
Otherwise speech goes silent.
I suspect your wireless may be driver related.
If possible please download Ubuntu Trusty 14.04.3 and test to see if the
same occurs.
You will note that same happens with your isntalling problem as does on
Vinux.
Thanks
Rob

Hello,

I installed the 32 bit version to my entire disk. This is repeating what I did a couple of weeks ago.

Here is my report using the install, the default desktop and the other two desktops.

**Installing

Trying to install from the opening frame was the same. One frame went silent and I could not start Orca. I tried to proceed by hitting the space bar to activate the default button. No response. I then tabbed and hit the space bar. After a few of these I had Orca back, and the desktop was starting.

I could then start the install from the main menu. Orca was there from then on.

**Using the default desktop

In Unity, the menu has changed from Vinux 4. In that version, it was easier to find things because of the various horizontal menus. I could arrow left or right quickly and then down. Shutdown was easily accessible.

In Vinux 5, there appears to be only the one main menu using alt+F1. This menu has no shutdown. Maybe there are shortcut keys or what you call panels. I don’t know anything about navigating a desktop.

The console still doesn’t have speakup. I have to start it in the terminal and switch to the console. Speakup starts with a very low rate, F2. I always have to increase it.

I do not have a wired connection with my new and old modem router combo.

**Changing Desktops.

I tried GNOME and Mate. After entering my password this is what happened.

GNOME

I hear the welcome tune and then nothing. Every second time I used the super+alt+s combination, I heard:

  Screen reader off

The flat review never works.

When I pressed the power button, I heard:

… will power off in 60 seconds

Orca was alive so I could tab and select the cancel button. Then Orca was silent.

Press the power button again and Orca comes back.

MATE

No welcome tune and no Orca. Orca was not there except when I pressed the key combination super+alt+s. Every second time I heard:

  Screen reader off

Under Mate, pressing the power button does not start Orca as it did under GNOME.

No one has said that console speech would start automatically, so do not be surprised...lol
When you open the main meu in mate there are three colums accessed bu using left and right arrows after the menu opens with f1. The column where it
opens is the apps menu section, left arrow and you are in the shystem section and there is where shutcown and such are as well as all the menus for
settings and configuration and if you go right instead of left you are in the places menus where our bookmarks will appear once ou have some along with
basic folders and recently used ones.
Rill, were you changing between using battery and AC current when you had the choppy speech issues?
If not, maybe a little hack that Majid shared with me will help you, write me off list about this and I'lll pass it along.
Restarting speech is another option during installation when things go silent, at least it worked for me sometimes.

Rob, I'll try to install Ubuntu Trusty and report back.
As for what I am calling muddy pulse audio speech in the gui ... I go to
the console when it frustrates me.
