Hey all,

Has anybody had experience with this? From what I've read on the Internet, my bug may suffer from this.

First of all Kyle, please tell us what leads you to believe you have a leaky mechanical fuel pump?

Herbie went through a tank of gas in a week in mostly local city driving, say perhaps 5 to 10 miles a day.

Also, his erratic, take off in first, second and sometimes third, and wanting to not idle like he is starved for fuel after running a little while (say five minutes or so.)

If your carburetor has an idle cutoff valve (electromagnetic cut off valve)  and it is not working, the engine would not idle and most likely stall. Really easy to check just leave the ignition on (engine not running), disconnect the lead and tap it to the cutoff valve you should hear the valve engage.

Also have you checked the choke positioning, when warm is the choke full opened?

When was the last time the carburetor was rebuilt?  Is the carburetor properly jetted, too large of a main jet would create excessive fuel consumption and also lead to very black/wet plugs.

Dan

That test checks if it's electrically functional, but the tiny orifices on the jet end can be totally clogged.

It's a good idea,  but it is a new carburetor that was bench  tested before being shipped to me.
