Thank you all for your input about my inability to install the muffler clamp donuts. I finally got them in but had to grind off some of the donut thickness for the clamp to go around. Now I can get around to cleaning/rebuilding my 44 IDFs and get this bug running.
Any chance I can use something I have at home instead of carb/parts cleaner? Gasoline, white gas (stove fuel), denatured alcohol, elbow grease & compressed air?
Wish me luck, the rebuild kits are on their way.

I think the trouble I’m having is that the woven metal gasket is too wide
to be enclosed (along with the retaining ring and muffler mini-flange) by
the clamps. The clamps don’t seem wide enough. ...more

Hi Dean,
You can use Simply Green, Purple Power or Castrol Super Clean.  You may want to cut them 50/50 with water and do not leave on for more then a few minutes and then rinse thoroughly then blow out all ports with compressed air.

Regards and good luck,
Dan

Let me second Dan’s admonition to leave parts in those solutions for a limited time only. I recently left an aluminum part in Purple Power overnight. The solution etched the aluminum, leaving deep pockmarks. I tossed the piece and started over.
