MEDIA STATEMENT

SA swimmers jet into Rome in positive mood ahead of FINA World Championships

23 July 2009

For immediate release

The SA swimming team were in high spirits upon their arrival in Rome following their 6-day camp in Slovenia, in preparation for the swimming pool leg of the 13th FINA World Championships, which starts on July 26.

“The reason why the team trained in Slovenia is because the conditions there are pretty similar to what they will experience in Rome, and also the fact that Slovenia is not that far away from a travelling perspective,” said national team coach Graham Hill, who put the swimmers through their paces.

The SA swim team will be kitted for competition in Arena X- Glide swim suits and based on their showing in training, we are confident of witnessing several class performances from our athletes. Of course, swimmers from other countries will be wearing different swim suits so just how fast they are going is another issue, but I am confident that our swimmers will do our country proud.”

Among those who greeted the team upon arrival was Durban swim star Chad Ho, who took the bronze medal in the 5km open water swim on Tuesday.

“My focus was always on the 10km open water swim but the chance came in the 5km competition and I took it,” said Ho.

“I would have loved to have won a medal in both races but am delighted to be able to go home with the bronze medal from the 5km event.”

Meanwhile on the water polo front today, the SA women’s side found the going tough against Canada in their final Group C match, going down 20-5.
