Character input vs. word input

Call me slow, but I don't understand what is meant in the VimTouch settings about "character" vs. "word" input methods. I'm just barely starting to use VimTouch, sometimes on my phone or tablet with Swiftkey (not using swiping) and sometimes with a Logitec Bluetooth keyboard. (I think there needs to be a bit more documentation about the Android-specific features of VimTouch.

I love the fact this exists on Android; thanks so much!
