First, thanks for showing up last night. I hope you all enjoyed the meeting, I certainly did. I think this group could be the beginning of something special. Ola Bini has already threatened to start an Emacs user's group in Chicago, I take that as a good sign for us!
For next time, Adam Walters has graciously offered to give an overview of the rails.vim plugin. I've tentatively scheduled it for about-the-same-time next month =]. I'll send out something formal in the coming weeks.
The configuration I use, and discussed last night is available here:
Evan got me all hot and bothered on 'git grep', the super fast indexed search in Git. So, I created this on my morning train ride. It works just like ack.vim as demonstrated last night, but uses 'git grep' instead. Commands are GitGrep/GitGrepAdd/LGitGrep/LGitGrepAdd.
Here's a recap of last night's discussions:
Suggested meeting topics (and who's signed up to present them):
Contrasting eclipse / textmate / vim - Andy Maleh
Rails.vim overview - Adam Walters
Surround.vim overview - Corey Haines
How I work with vim (need to flesh out exactly what this is - I have some ideas)
Vim for Textmate users - convert the masses!
A deep review of advanced undo/redo support (earlier & later)
Using CTags
Registers
Macros
Using visual modes
Most of these can be covered easily in 15 or 20 minutes. So, if you've never given a talk before this is a great opportunity to give it a shot!
And, of course, there's so much more not listed here. If you'd like to present a topic or suggest a topic please send an e-mail to the group (or me).
Questions:
What's the best way to start learning vim?
Hooking up Autospec w/VIM
We had some trouble getting it working however. If someone has time to figure it out and report back that'd be great (or a good meeting topic!)
Resizing windows
'CTRL-W =' Seems like the one you want to remember, there's a bunch more:
Swapping split windows
'CTRL-W CTRL-R' (Thanks Corey!)
Cheers,
-Tyler Jennings
