This is likely an issue with encoding type (we seen a few reports of this happening with Hebrew subtitles). Infuse will try and guest the encoding type, but in some cases it may not always be 100% accurate.
The default encoding is correctly guessed by Infuse and the subtitles appears correctly at the beginning of the movie, but suddenly disappears for some strange reason.
The annoying solution is to manually choose the encoding for each movie or episode you want to watch.
Unfortunately, not like the old Media Player where the encoding stayed to the last choice, this setting is reversed to default when you stop a movie and switch to another one, and then subtitltes always disappear.
I am having the same recurring issue every week with old Top of the Pops episodes on BBC 4. The subtitles will NOT activate. I've tried everything and they will just not come on. Why is this?! I do not have this problem with any other programme. The Top of the Pops are broadcast every Friday 19:00-21:00. All 4 episodes - no subtitles!!
However, when the TOTP episodes are repeated later on the subtitles work fine! Eh?! What is going on here?! It is baffling. Does anybody else have this issue? It used to only occur on my TiVo box approx. once every 3-4 months. Now, it's happening every week and it's spoiling my enjoyment of TOTP. I really like subtitles on TOTP.
Yes, other BBC 4 programmes work fine. All other recordings work fine. I record news programmes, soaps, documentaries, all sorts. This issue only occurs with TOTP when they are first broadcast on Friday evenings 19:00-21:00. Again, I reiterate - this glitch ONLY happens with TOTP.
I find it absolutely baffling. I mean, these TOTP episodes are decades old, so the subtitles should already be loaded up and ready to activate. And like I said above, it's happening EVERY week now and it's totally spoiling my musical experience. TOTP is / was one of my fave shows of all time!
On iPlayer once you've loaded the program press Down twice on the remote control navigation button. This should place a cursor on a sub menu at the bottom of the screen, then using the left/right keys on the remote scroll across and click OK to turn on/off sub titles.
Yes, the subtitles on IPlayer will probably work just fine. However, I like to record TOTP's on the actual TiVo hard drive then play them back. It's easier, more convenient, and quicker to fast-forward through songs I don't like. Whereas using IPlayer it's slower and more awkward. V.M. need to sort this problem out as it's very annoying.
Also, why don't you all try recording all 4 TOTP's this Friday from 19:00-21:00 and see if the same thing happens on your TiVo boxes! This will make a good experiment. Then I will know if it's just my TiVo box or if everybody's is doing the same thing. Try it, guys, please, I'm curious to see what unfolds....

Do you also have internet with VM? The reason I'm asking is that if you do and you have issues with your tivo box that can't be repaired then VM will swap it out for free to the newer V6 box. This has double the storage space for recording purposes, along with 6 tuners compared to the tivo's 3 tuners. It's also faster and has more apps.
Yes, you are right, newapollo. Snooker is back and will probably run over and interfere with the TV schedules. I'm still gonna try the experiment though. I need to know what the heck is going on with these subtitles. It could even be supernatural in nature as I have heard many people describe how their electrical equipment behaves in weird and unexpected ways. I've had other incidents in my household and I could not find rational explanations. Tbh, I never know what's gonna happen next....
On iPad, when i open a Youtube video with subtitles enabled the subtitles disappear when switching to fullscreen. Is there a get around to regain subtitles in fullscreen? Has a solution been found for this problem?
Pay close attention to when he says: "i cant handle her". When the subtitle appears, the area above black bar brightens and then dims down. Is this normal? I have seen this happening in a lot in many HDR movies. Netflix and Amazon prime show subtitles in the lower middle section of the screen and the subtitles have borders around them so not so much of a problem. But movies played through usb or streamed subtitles on black bars shows the problem.
It happens when the subtitle is displayed in black bar area only. if I move the position of the subtitle above black bar, it is fine. I have tried turning motion, local dimming and contrast enhancer off, but no improvement. I have tested playing this movie using Samsung own player, through fire stick and through apple TV, same behavior with all these devices. I think it needs fixing? or what can we do about it?
When watching content with black bars, the TV dims the part of the picture close to the black bars too much.
So when subtitles appear in the black bar area, the whole bottom part of the picture suddenly brightens.
Got the same issue on 2020 QE75Q950T 8K QLED. Especially when using internal apps this issue is very visible with every overlay text or playback bar that is shown, e.g. with Netflix app. When watching Netflix using my NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV via HDMI, it is a lot better, but also peak brightness is lower then.
I found having Gamemode turned on even for movies reduced the stuttering and made the overall picture brighter for me in HDR Content. Subtitle dimming is a issue i can't fix. Would be a flawless TV otherwise.
Could you all make sure you've updated to the latest software version? On another thread, they stated that after updating the issue was fixed. Check out that thread here: -subtitle-dimming-finally-fixed/td-p/2089586
It happens when the subtitles are in the black bar. The lower part of the film (above the black bar) flashes bright and then dims down again. Every time anyone speaks. It's incredibly distracting. Some films/scenes are worse than others.
Edit: it's probably because the dimming algorithm darkens the lower part of the image to prevent black border blooming. Whenever a subtitle pops in it toggles back into 16:9 mode, lighting up the whole row of dimming zones.
That's nice. I live in a country where everyone watches with translation subs so I won't be able to sell a brand new TV anywhere near its purchase price without getting angry calls back. First and last samsung. I should have read forums instead of reviews.
Let me list the problems I observed. It seems that almost all shows are messed up, as smbs0808 said. In the beginning of the episode, there is only a small lag (e.g., 2 or 3 phrases differ). However, towards the ending of the episode, the difference between the Netflix subtitles and the Translation Language is much bigger (approximately 30 phrases differ or more)
*Edit: Ive looked closer and it also appears inside the program, although more subtle. The options Ive selected for subtitles are "open subtitles". I havent put any effects on the video or the subtitles.
Also, I always like to throw out the recommendation that you make subtitles with the Essential Graphics tool rather than the Captions tool unless you actually need to work with sidecar files. Maybe that doesn't apply here, but if you have no need to work with .srt's, then in my opinion you don't need to hamstring yourself with the captions tool.
Im quite the newbie and I havent found an option to change the way of encoding. I have, however, fixed the problem by exporting the vid without compression. I dont know why this fixed it. Afterwards I converted the vid to mp4 with another software and still... not the same problem as exporting directly to mp4.
Gi to settings>accessibility>captions mode>and you can check three options: off, on always, on replay. Sometimes, if the program you are watching is in a foreign language, the subtitles will turn on by default. There's no way to turn those off.
Same here now... started about a week ago, all channels. CC turns on after I turn it off. It will come back on during the same darn channel after a while also. Very frustrating. This is a ROKU issue not a app issue.
I am having same issue! I've tried at app level and main level .... It keeps turning itself back on ....this just started today with me. It has to be a bug from roku to be affecting all these users .... Do u have an updated fix available?
This is has been an issue since I first posted, and I have not yet found a solution that works. I just bite the bullet and turn it off manually every day, as soon as I realize that I have been reading instead of listening for the past several minutes.
I rely heavily on subtitles when watching tv as I'm hearing-impaired, but recently the english subtitles on now are just terrible. Many are completely omitted, every other is completely wrong. I couldn't make sense of the show we were watching (true detective season 3) until my partner told me that half of the subtitles were wrong. I don't understand how this could be happening unless NOW has started using AI-generated subtitles all of the sudden. Please consider your hearing-impaired and deaf audience!
