how to display devanagari in vim

they just become hollow rectangles, seems missing the glyphs. Does
anyone know how to display them in vim (or xterm for that matter).

1. Make sure that your locale ($LC_ALL, or if unset $LC_CTYPE, or if
unset $LANG) has its third part (after the dot) set to UTF-8. (For

2. Make sure that your xterm uses a Unicode display font with devanagari
glyphs.
How to check item 2 above:
1. In your mailer, "Select all" the text of your email, to which I'm
replying here.
2. "Copy" it to the clipboard.
3. In gvim, with 'encoding' set to utf-8, open a new file (e.g.,
~/devanagari.txt)
4. Paste the clipboard by means of
"+p
5. Save the file.
6. In your xterm, at the shell prompt, type
cat ~/devanagari.txt
This works for me (I see the devanagari glyphs). In the same terminal
(konsole, actually, in my case), Console Vim correctly displays all
glyphs too. (The font I'm using in this konsole terminal is "Andale
Mono", Regular (i.e., not italic), size 9.)

Unfortunately, it displayed hollow box in xterm. I guess it is a
problem of xterm itself and is unrelated to vim, or I don't know how
to configure the ~/.Xresources to make it work.

I believe that's a font limitation. With fixed in xterm I get the
same as you. With dejavu sans mono the characters display just
fine.

I also use dejavu sans mono in xterm but it cannot display. Do you
mean you get it done in xterm or other newer terminals such as
kconsole or gnome-terminal? BTW does dejavu sans mono contain glyph
for devanagari which unlikely to be a mono font.

characters occupy double width. I will just use gvim instead, I
suppose it is the gtk or pango backend that do the substitution magic.

You could have a try rxvt-unicode, it has better unicode support.

No, it can't. I guess that indic is a complex script. I just give up
xterm for displaying it, at least I can use gtk/pango to render them.
I can not find any support for siddham script for linux. There is one
ttf for window but that does not work under linux. If anyone knows
how to use siddham script under linux, please let me know. :-)

ah, ok. I use fixed. dejavu is nice, but the horizontal kerning
is to big for my taste. And as I don't speak/read Asian
languages, and just like the look of the glyphs I take fixed for
everyday use which unfortunately doesn't contain all of them.

You're right, I just tried with -fa "dejavu sans mono", and even
-fd "dejavu sans mono".

It works in Apple's Terminal.app and iTerm. Sorry for not
mentioning that in the first place.

They are. I don't know the exact terminology but the
"mathras" are complex, requiring the base character to have
something placed above, or below, or both, or even for part
of the base character to be modified to accommodate.
My native tongue is Telugu, and if you look in
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indic_scripts#Vowels to the
second of the two column under Telugu, you'll see what I
mean. The base character "ka" looks like an "S" with a tick
mark on top of it, and the list shown is "kaa", "ki", "kee",
etc.. When you get to the "kai" (NLAC code ai) you will see
it requires two "mathras", one above and one below.
We had (in $DAYJOB, as part of CSR work) done a lot of work
fixing the font rendering engines to accomodate these things
-- mostly on pango, but it's been a while, and I just
assumed that the changes must have filtered down to other
software that uses/renders fonts.
Contact me in private email if needed; the two main guys in
that team have left the company now but I can still ask for
help or advice (they started a company called Synovel, and
they make spicebird if you've heard of it). It's all open
source, fed back to gnome (one of those guys had gnome
commit access!) and they'll do what they can to help, within
the constraints of running their own company in these
times...
[sorry for sounding like spam, but all this is open source
work and I'm not mentioning my company's name so I hope it
won't be taken as a plug for anything remotely commercial!]
