Hello, friends,
I have a huge file like:
dbv file=/sja7/appl/oracle/ship/system01.dbf feedback=100 logfile=./.log blocksize=8192
dbv file=/sja8/appl/oracle/ship/undotbs.dbf feedback=100 logfile=./.log blocksize=8192
dbv file=/sja7/appl/oracle/ship/tools.dbf feedback=100 logfile=./.log blocksize=8192
dbv file=/sja7/appl/oracle/ship/dtuser_01.dbf feedback=100 logfile=./.log blocksize=8192
.....
how can I change them to like below (acturally, how to add logfile names which is conresponding to its datafile names) by using vim?
dbv file=/sja7/appl/oracle/ship/system01.dbf feedback=100 logfile=./system01.log blocksize=8192
dbv file=/sja8/appl/oracle/ship/undotbs.dbf feedback=100 logfile=./undotbs.log blocksize=8192
dbv file=/sja7/appl/oracle/ship/tools.dbf feedback=100 logfile=./tools.log blocksize=8192
dbv file=/sja7/appl/oracle/ship/dtuser_01.dbf feedback=100 logfile=./dtuser_01.log blocksize=8192
............
Thank you very much

Folks, how about trimming the messages you are replying to? Also, please try to NOT
add company disclaimers (the message I'm replying to had two of them).
Messages on this mailing list are sent to over 2000 people (not including 339 banned
spammers!), and are archived forever on several sites.
John
Can I add bottom posting to this request for the double whammy?
Personally, I read left to right, top to bottom. Any other way and I get
dizzy. ;)
Good point. Bottom posting is the custom on this mailing list.
For the perfect message to vim_use, please:
- For a new message, use a short subject mentioning your topic.
- Omit disclaimers and long signatures.
- In replies, delete excess quoted material.
- Post your reply BELOW the short, relevant quote.
These rules apply to everyone except Bram and Tony!
John
Yes. Thank you. Let's recognise it as such rather than having any
pretense that it's somehow better than top-posting (except for the sake
of humour, of course). Bottom posting kinda makes *me* dizzy. But it is
the custom for this list, so let's stick to it. Sorry I've been a bit
slack recently; I followed the example of a number of others who also
seem to prefer top-posting.
Ben.
IMO these rules and the exception clause should be mentioned in the
subscription page and the account confirmation email.

I have added a "How to post messages" section at:
http://groups.google.com/group/vim_use/web/vim-information
Bram and others: Please have a look and let me know if you think a change is needed.
I don't think it's possible to customise what Google presents to a user who
subscribes, and I'm pretty sure we can't change what's in the account confirmation
email.
People are pretty relaxed here (I intended a fair amount of humour in my recent
messages; sorry if that wasn't clear), and we're certainly not going to formally
adopt a set of rules. I imagine very few people will notice the "vim-information"
page, but it's there if wanted.
John
Yes. If nothing else, it is helpful to be able to say, "Please follow
the posting directions at this link," rather than needing to explain
them all in detail every time.
Regarding the page itself: it's good content, but could it be more
clearly formatted, e.g. making the paragraphs a bulleted list or
something?
One suggestion for content improvement: subjects should be short, but
specific. In fact, I would personally say both the examples of subjects
are pretty poor. They are very broad. "Searching in files" begs the
question "for what?" IMHO, something longer but more specific is heaps
better: E.g. Find everywhere a word occurs in many files.
Ben.
I tried a bulleted list and it was pretty ugly. I only have rudimentary html
knowledge and have no idea whether it can be fixed in a Google page. Maybe I should
enable members to edit the page for 24 hours in the hope that someone here would
tweak it?

OK. However, we're conversing in a thread called "Hello, how to do?" and I was just
hoping to improve on that. It might need a fair bit of writing skill to do better
than my proposed examples, and I was wanting to suggest a minimum standard, while
pointing out that terms like "question on" and "how do I" are probably not needed in
a Subject. Would more precision really be worthwhile in a mailing list?
John
I'm happy to have a go if you like. As long as it's in the next 24 hours or so, as
I'll be away for a while after that. :-)

Yeah, fair call.

I think it helps, particularly when searching the archives.
Ben.
Why shouldn't I? Well, maybe I don't always remove excess quoted
material, but that's out of lazyness, in fact I ought to. The rest is
more-or-less second nature to me.
And, BTW, and not only for this ML, see also "How To Ask Questions The
Smart Way" http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
Best regards,
Tony.

The Soviet pre-eminence in chess can be traced to the average Russian's
readiness to brood obsessively over anything, even the arrangement of
some pieces of wood. Indeed, the Russians' predisposition for quiet
reflection followed by sudden preventive action explains why they led
the field for many years in both chess and ax murders. It is well
known that as early as 1970, the U.S.S.R., aware of what a defeat at
Reykjavik would do to national prestige, implemented a vigorous program
of preparation and incentive. Every day for an entire year, a team of
psychologists, chess analysts and coaches met with the top three
Russian grand masters and threatened them with a pointy stick. That
these tactics proved fruitless is now a part of chess history and a
further testament to the American way, which provides that if you want
something badly enough, you can always go to Iceland and get it from
the Russians.

Good. I hope Bram doesn't mind, but I've enabled members to be able to edit pages,
and will restore so only managers can edit in about 24 hours.

Be patient using the interface. I think it's best to explicitly cancel (click
"Discard changes") rather than close the session, if you want to abort.
After clicking "Save & Update", you get a silly window with an offer to post a
pointless message. Click "Skip this" (from memory; label may be a little different).

Because your messages are worth reading *always*, no matter how you
quote, or if you quote at all ;)))
Leaving quoting appart, I still have to find one of your messages that
didn't teach me anything, being on topic or not.

Usually I don't live in the same world of ESR, but this time is very
reasonable and the advices are quite good. Even experienced people
(experienced in the sense of communicating using the net) make big
mistakes when asking questions (myself, for example).

Looks good to me.

Completely agreed.

I think it's better now. You may prefer the second-last version. Though
at the moment none of my versions seem to be showing up--rather it is
showing my changes, attributed to you.
I pulled a couple of example subject lines from the actual list and put
them as examples, too. I thought they were pretty good ones.
Obviously you can change. The formatting should stick even if you change
the text, I think.
Ben.
Seems to be ok now (attributed to you).
Thanks, that's much nicer. Your html is extremely similar to something I tried, but
mine looked really yucky. Your subject examples are good.
I've restored it so only managers can edit pages now.
John
May be it should also mention posting a new message by starting a new
thread but not by replying to an unrelated mail.
What is the political correct email address of this mailing list?
vim.org or googlegroups?

Either. v...@vim.org is the legacy (upward-compatible) name, you know
that upwards-compatibility rates very high with Bram. Nowadays, it
redirects to vim...@googlegroups.com. Similarly for vim...@vim.org and
vim...@googlegroups.com etc. One advantage of the new names is that
they can be accessed directly as Google Groups from the Google interface
by means of your browser.
And BTW, if I'm not mistaken, you just started what ought to have been a
new thread by replying to an existing (unrelated) message instead. :-P
Best regards,
Tony.

I replied to the thread changed by a moderator. Hopefully that post

That issue is a bit of a mess and I have purposely avoided confronting it on the
vim-information page. Historically, this group has always been v...@vim.org. The
mailing list was massively disrupted when the v...@vim.org mailserver died, and I
think Bram hoped to minimise future hassles by keeping that name active even though
the group is currently correctly addressed as vim...@googlegroups.com (so people
would be able to use v...@vim.org even if another change is required in the future).
