Look at the footer ^

All unsubscribing info should appear there.

Not if you read the mailing list through the google groups interface.

I would suggest that we stop responding "look at the footer" because
"the footer" isn't there at all on the google groups interface. Either
reproduce it, or post the relevant information.

I really do wonder sometimes, though...there have to be 4 threads a
month about how to unsubscribe.

Anyway...

1. send an email to vim_use-u...@googlegroups.com
2. click the link in the confirmation email

I found this by searching the mailing list for "unsubscribe" (which
gave 6 pages of hits)

Perhaps the answer should be in an FAQ which is periodically posted to
the list?

A very brief FAQ could include:

1. Info about maintaining your subscription, including unsubscribing.

2. Links to the Vim FAQ, the Vim Tips wiki, and other useful info.

3. Links to the list archives

4. A short paragraph describing how to use Vim's built-in help system.

5. Some brief pointers about list etiquette. (Include a meaningful
subject line, don't top-post, trim your quotes, etc.)

The question of an FAQ has come up on this list before, but the focus in
that discussion was on questions about Vim itself rather than the list.
As Bram pointed out, the Vim FAQ and Tips wiki already serve the purpose
of collecting answers to frequent questions about Vim. That's where the
discussion ended, as far as I can tell.

I agree that there's no need to bloat people's inboxes by reproducing
the Vim FAQ (or the wiki) in a periodic posting. That's why I'm
suggesting we simply provide the links to that material.

Alternatively, even Google Groups will show you the extended headers,
and the headers include:

List-Id: <vim_use.googlegroups.com>
List-Post: <mailto:vim...@googlegroups.com>
List-Help: <mailto:vim_us...@googlegroups.com>
List-Unsubscribe: <http://googlegroups.com/group/vim_use/subscribe>,
<mailto:vim_use+u...@googlegroups.com>

Not the Vim FAQ. I'm talking about an FAQ that addresses questions
about the mailing list itself. Like the one that launched the original
thread: how do I unsubscribe?

I know the answer is already on the website. But for some reason people
aren't going there to read it before asking the question here. So maybe
we need to take a belt & suspenders approach and put the answer here
where they apparently expect to find it.

Hmm...I'm not seeing that option.

If I click the "more options" on a specific message, I get:

Reply | Reply to author | Forward | Print | Individual message | Show
original | Report this message | Find messages by this author

The only one I would think could help is "show original" and the text
you quote does not appear there.

If I click the "Options" at the top of the page, I get:

Standard view View as tree
Proportional text Fixed font
Email updates to me

Nothing helpful there.

I similarly cannot find it in my google account preferences.

Regardless, though...this isn't something the average person should be
expected to know.

We should respond with a clear instruction, not refer them to a
message header or footer that they may not be able to see.

Or we can figure out a way to make it abundantly obvious, but nothing
hits me right away.

Go to your Google _groups_ page, http://groups.google.com/ and make sure
you are signed in (if necessary, click "Sign In" at top right). Then,
click "Manage my memberships" and in the last column, on the line
corresponding to the group from which you want to unsubscribe, change
"Email" to "Unsubscribe"

Alternately, send an email (which may be empty) to
vim-uns...@vim.org -- making sure that the "From" line contains the
address to which your list mail is sent.

If one of the above methods doesn't work, try the other.

Best regards,
Tony.

Are you talking about using a web browser at
http://groups.google.com/group/vim_use

Surely the only reason someone would ask how to unsubscribe is because
they don't want stuff mailed to them. In which case, "look at the
footer" should be adequate (even if they read the advice with the web
interface which doesn't show that footer). I don't think we've had a
"what footer?" response.

Also, the web interface shows a clear "Edit my membership" link (if
logged on, as would be the case if you posted a message).

The reason I say "look at the footer" is to keep the response simple and
consistent. Due to the historical accident of v...@vim.org, the situation
IS confusing, and there are a couple of ways to unsubscribe.

Now that I've added a bit more to "vim-information", perhaps the
standard reply could be:

Use the footer of any email, or click "more information" on the Home web
page.

It's a good suggestion, but the fundamental problem is that someone who
loses interest in the mailing list just stops reading. They then spend a
few weeks deleting stuff, then they post here. They don't notice the
footer on each mail, and I don't think they would notice a FAQ.

I realise that people won't notice the following, but I've just added a
small "how to unsubscribe" item on:
http://groups.google.com/group/vim_use/web/vim-information

Old timers will know to look in the header of any message, where you
find:

Perhaps we could change the footer to:
You received this message from the "vim_use" maillist.
http://www.vim.org/maillist.php has information and how to unsubscribe

Having two names (v...@vim.org + vim...@googlegroups.com) might confuse
some people (they wouldn't expect information about "v...@vim.org" to be
relevant for a Google Group). It might help to add a line with the
Google Group name, but that risks getting too wordy.

In short, I don't think there's a solution (however, I've kept your
suggestion in case we want to reconsider a monthly/weekly short-FAQ
about the list).

Well, there is a link "Edit my membership" on the right. And there is
"My Groups" at the top.

I think unsubscribing is rather a problem when reading the list via e-
mail. It seems to me the OP used outlook as a client -- or whatever
explains the ms word lines in his raw post. I don't use outlook but
most outlook users I know don't know how to show extended headers --
or simply don't do it. Some plain text footer that is visible
regardless of the e-mail client should solve the problem.

Seems to me there already is one. Maybe Google will cut it from your
mail (above) but it will readd it to mine (after the sig).

Best regards,
Tony.

Sorry, I read the list through the web interface so I wasn't aware of
it.

Thomas.
