Why do you want install vim from source? Has not your distro
vim-package? I think, you should compile programs later (this report
show that you are not "expert")
Suggest: you should install ncurses and ncurses-devel (I think ncurses
library already installed because it's the one of most important
libraries).

If configuring fails you don't have to try make or make install
This configuring could be triggered by make though.

This is a serious error: you must install dev libraries of one of the
libraries:

> checking for tgetent in -lncurses... no
> checking for tgetent in -ltermlib... no
> checking for tgetent in -ltermcap... no
> checking for tgetent in -lcurses... no

and retry. Maybe you're missing more than that. But that's the obvious
reason why configure failed.

As I wrote: ncurses-devel.
Again: why do you want install vim from source? I think it would be
simplier when you will install vim from source.

to be fair, the distro provides an old version, i think 7.1, and many
scripts and plugins are designed to fail completely (i.e. stop
sourcing) if not at least 7.2

i you could please be more specific which library and how to install
it...cheers

Which distro do you use? Do you see ncurses-*-devel?

See the portion beginning "There are several ways to install the required
libraries" under:
http://vimhelp.appspot.com/vim_faq.txt.html#faq-35.10

Summary:

Often distributions have ways to install all of the packages required to
build a given package, even if you're not installing the package itself.

E.g. under Debian-derived distros (includes Ubuntu), just do:

$ apt-get build-dep vim-gtk

Under OpenSUSE:

$ zypper source-install --build-deps-only vim

Under RedHat derivatives:

$ yum-builddep PACKAGE_NAME
(not sure of the exact package name - vim or gvim, etc)

Sounds like Ubuntu, right?

Try libncurses5-dev and libncursesw5-dev.

1) try removing all the text you're no longer refering to

2) apt-cache search is your friend (or whatever package search tool your
distribution is using. If you don't know try a form or a irc chat
room)

You have to understand that c application are made up of
- header files (.h)
- source files (.c or .cc or the like)

Both are compiled to libraries.
The libraries are required to run an application. The header files are
required to create a new application based on such a library.

Most distributions provide binaries only by default - thus they only
distribute the libraries. They also provide the header files in separate
packages. Most of the time those are suffixed by -devel or such.

Let's try a search

mawercer:~# apt-cache search ncurses | grep dev
- btscanner - ncurses-based scanner for Bluetooth devices
- libcunit1-ncurses-dev - Unit Testing Library for C (ncurses) -- development files
- libkaya-ncurses-dev - Ncurses binding for kaya
- libkaya-ncursesw-dev - Ncurses binding for kaya
- libtexttools-dev - Ada and C++ library for writing console applications
lib64ncurses5-dev - developer's libraries for ncurses (64-bit)
libncurses5-dev - developer's libraries and docs for ncurses
libncursesw5-dev - developer's libraries for ncursesw
- libcurses-ocaml-dev - OCaml bindings for the ncurses library

I've marked the packages which are the wrong ones because Ocaml, Ada are
other programming languages and you're not looking for a testing
framework.

So one of those is what you're looking for:

lib64ncurses5-dev - developer's libraries for ncurses (64-bit)
libncurses5-dev - developer's libraries and docs for ncurses
libncursesw5-dev - developer's libraries for ncursesw

Now probably the description is enough to find out about the library.

Which ubuntu are you on?
I'm running mint 10, based on ubuntu 10.10 and have 7.2.30 installed.

The easiest way to install is to use apt-get install and force the version.
