yast assures me I have the latest gtk2-devel and gtk3-devel

Check the console output from configure if you still have it, or else
the src/auto/config.log (or src/shadow/auto/config.log if you build in
a shadow directory) which is more verbose. What exactly does configure
not find that it should?

I have no problem building Vim with GTK2 on openSUSE Leap 42.1. I set
up my config settings by sourcing (not running) the following bash
script:

#!/bin/bash
export CONF_OPT_GUI='--enable-gnome-check'
export CONF_OPT_PERL='--enable-perlinterp'
export CONF_OPT_PYTHON='--enable-pythoninterp'
export CONF_OPT_TCL='--enable-tclinterp'
# /usr/bin/tclsh (softlink) is correctly set
export CONF_OPT_RUBY='--enable-rubyinterp'
export CONF_OPT_LUA='--enable-luainterp'
export CONF_OPT_MZSCHEME='--disable-mzschemeinterp'
#export CONF_OPT_PLTHOME='--with-plthome=/usr/local/plt'
export CONF_OPT_CSCOPE='--enable-cscope'
export CONF_OPT_MULTIBYTE='--enable-multibyte'
export CONF_OPT_FEAT='--with-features=huge'
export CONF_OPT_COMPBY='"--with-compiledby=antoine.m...@gmail.com"'

and when make latest ran configure for me, it logged the following on
stdout/stderr:

rm -f auto/config.cache
if test "X" != "Xclean" \
-a "X" != "Xdistclean" \
-a "X" != "Xautoconf" \
-a "X" != "Xreconfig"; then \

the message is very terse:

checking --enable-gui argument... GTK+ 2.x GUI support
checking --disable-gtktest argument... gtk test enabled
checking for pkg-config... /usr/bin/pkg-config
checking for GTK - version >= 2.2.0... no

Hm, you said gtk2-devel is installed. What is the answer to

rpm -q gtk2-devel

typed at the shell (bash etc.) command line? With me it says

gtk2-devel-2.24.30-8.3.x86_64

which is indeed "greater than or equal to 2.2.0"; and configure says
(in the lines corresponding to what you showed)

checking --enable-gui argument... yes/auto - automatic GUI support
checking whether or not to look for GTK+ 2... yes
checking whether or not to look for GNOME... yes
checking whether or not to look for Motif... yes
checking whether or not to look for Athena... yes
checking whether or not to look for neXtaw... yes
checking whether or not to look for Carbon... yes
checking --disable-gtktest argument... gtk test enabled
checking for pkg-config... /usr/bin/pkg-config
checking for GTK - version >= 2.2.0... yes; found version 2.24.30

Oh, and BTW, what is your version and patchlevel of the Vim source? I
have 7.4.1941.

Best regards,
Tony.

ok -- for me it says

Thu 20:19 ~/.build/vim: rpm -q gtk2-devel
gtk2-devel-2.24.30-8.3.x86_64

which looks strikingly similar to what it says for you, but for reasons
beyond my ken configure isn't finding it

I'm at 7.4.1941 too

Then I don't know what it is.

If you know (or if someone can tell you) how Debian guys use
"aptitude" or "apt-get" to get their required packages to build Vim,
install zypper-aptitude (it is available on the Leap 42.1 DVD but has
been updated, so if you don't yet have its latest (1.12.40-9.1)
version you should preferably install it from the Leap 42.1 Update-OSS
repository) then you get an "aptitude" command which will mimic the
Debian aptitude by means of the SUSE zypper.

N.B. YaST is the GUI/CUI package manager (for Gnome, KDE or curses)
and zypper is the command-line package manager (for dumb terminals
including even old-fashioned teletypewriters). Otherwise they have
approximately the same capabilities.

Best regards,
Tony.

I don't [yet] either -- I've been able to get an oddly different gui
with --enable-gui=athena -- it obeys -geometry directives just fine

The GTK check uses the "pkg-config" command. I suggest you look in the generated "configure" script in the auto directory to see what parameters it is being given, then run it yourself, and report the parameters and result here.

yes, I saw pkg-config -- it apparently searches a series of directories

/usr/lib/pkgconfig
/usr/share/pkgconfig
/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig
/usr/local/share/pkgconfig

looking for a module named something like gtk+-2.0.pc

of course I have no such module in any of those directories, and no
amount of upgrading gtk2-devel in yast puts one there

Based on your earlier emails, you seem to be running a 64-bit OS. In
that case, the file is likely in /usr/lib64/pkgconfig. I would think
that “rpm -ql gtk2-devel | fgrep .pc” would show the file.

Vim's configure script just runs “pkg-config --exists gtk+-2.0” to see
if GTK2's development files are available, which they should be given
you have gtk2-devel installed.

If you do indeed have the .pc file installed but “pkg-config --exists
gtk+-2.0” has a non-zero exit code, then pkg-config needs to be fixed to
look in the right directories.

In general, looking at src/auto/config.log should tell you (after wading
through lots of noise) what went wrong when running configure.

I'm on a debian-derived distro, so this may not be directly helpful, but for me
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/pkgconfig/gtk+-2.0.pc is an installed file of package "libgtk2.0-dev".

To mention the obvious just in case, are you running (in the vim src)

make reconfig

Sometimes that's necessary due to OS updates, without vim changing.

Then you may have one bit of useful information. Which command would
you run using aptitude or apt-get, to make sure that you have all
requirements for building Vim with GTK2? As I said earlier, the
openSUSE repositories include a "zypper-aptitude" package which
installs whatever is needed to mimic the Debian aptitude and apt-get
commands by means of the openSUSE "zypper" package manager.

Then after making sure that zypper-aptitude is installed, toothpik
could run aptitude or apt-get or whatever Debian users use, with the
same command-line arguments, and it would look for (and install if
missing) any necessary prerequisite for building Vim.

And after running that, "make reconfig", with the config settings set
by means of environment variables as I showed earlier, would run rerun
configure then immediately recompile all modules needed by whatever
config options were selected.

Best regards,
Tony.

sudo apt-get build-dep vim-gtk

Thanks. Toothpik, if this exact same command doesn't work for SUSE due
to the package names being different, then try

sudo apt-get build-dep gvim

at a bash prompt, after making sure that package zypper-aptitude is
installed. Depending where you call it from, you may have to give the
root password to the "sudo" command. ("gvim" is the name of the
openSUSE package containing Vim with GTK2 GUI.)

After that, reconfiguring and recompiling Vim ought to go well. (But
let's keep fingers crossed.)

Best regards,
Tony.

the latest version of vim received as an email patch is 7.4.1952

Wed 08:41 ~/.build/vim: sudo apt-get build-dep vim-gtk

and to be sure it wasn't an issue with my sudo configuration I su-ed
into root and did the apt-gets as root, same result

I am suspecting the basic flaw on this box, where I can't boot using the
newest kernel, I have to go back one just to have a gui is affecting my
build environment negatively

all the while apper is busily applying updates to who knows what kernel

I fear a zypper dup is in my future [where angels fear to tread]

Hm, apparently zypper/apt-get is missing the Vim sources, which are
found in a different repository than the rest. The URL for the Leap
42.1 Source (OSS) repository is
http://download.opensuse.org/source/distribution/leap/42.1/repo/oss --
you can add it by URL with the YaST "Software → Software Repositories"
menu, it ought not to overwrite your clone of Bram's source (so they
can live together) but if you have all the other requirements, and in
particular the necessary libraries and their "development" packages,
it ought already to be OK.

Then reconfigure and recompile. See
http://users.skynet.be/antoine.mechelynck/vim/compunix.htm for
details.

Best regards,
Tony.

zypper dup was no cure -- it took a full on re-installation of suse but
I seem to have everything back in place and functioning on all gtk2
cylinders

thx for putting up with me
