Affinity Photo Beta 2.4 does not start, both from the exe file and msi installation, regardless if I run it as a user or admin. I am running Windows 11, which is up to date. Designer and Publisher start after running them 3 times after they have previously crashed during starting up attempts. I uninstalled the programs, removed the .affinity directory, as I've read somewhere on the forums, and restarted the computer. After that I again installed the Designer (from exe file), Publisher (from exe file) and Photo (from both exe file and msi - in this order). I think there is something wrong with the installer or program software code. Please check and inform me via e-mail when the problem is solved. This has been going on since the 2.3 Beta update.

Why did you install twice? And do you mean MSIX rather than MSI? Your only installer choices are .exe and .msix, and you should not have both installed (nor should you use a mix of .exe and .msix across the 3 applications).

This post was originally made in the V2 bugs section of the forum which is strictly for the release version of the apps. I have now moved it to the beta specific section of the forums, please ensure any future beta related bugs are posted here

@ Walt Farrel - I installed the programs twice, because Photo was not starting up and I read somewhere in the forums (which seemed to be working for a user), that all programs in the suit had to be uninstalled, and that the .affinity folder had to be removed as well, after which the computer should be restarted, before installing the programs are installed again. You are correct in that I should have used the msix, which I checked in explorer; it wasn't an msi file that I used for installation. But regardless of that, I always start with installing from the exe files and that should work, even beta versions, because in my opinion Serif issues Beta versions to see if functions work properly or should be changed. But for users to try beta versions, the program has to start in the first place. I see no other purpose to issue beta versions. So, installations from exe files or msix should at least allow the programs to start up, otherwise users are unable to check the programs' functionality. Also, if the regular versions contain bugs, I had hoped they were fixed in the beta versions. I did not install the programs from exe files and msix alongside each other. This is the last time I will use beta versions, because they gave me problems for months., assuming this is not going to help Serif in letting users try out beta versions. However if beta versions actually do at least start up, that could be a useful thing for Serif. And to answer your last question, I do not have anti-virus and anti-malware programs installed, except the default Defender which comes with Windows.

Looking at a previous post from yourself I can also see that you have modified the permissions for the 'WindowApps' folder yourself. These folders are for Sandboxed apps which is where the MSIX apps install to. Microsoft prevent access to this folder for security reasons and modifying this yourself will cause further problems, which it does look like you're now encountering. We would never recommend users to modify these permissions and are unable to support those who do.

I have had a long standing problem with PhotoPlus x8 (or indeed, previous versions) crashing when attempting to export as a PSD file, with layers. Today, I spent some time adding layers to a photographer's job which arrived as an Adobe original PSD which x8 quite happily opened.

I forgot until far too late that most likely (true) that I would not be able to export it as PSD, and after examining the other export file formats drew the conclusion I'd wasted a morning, would have buy PS, which I did not want to do. I saved the job in PhotoPlus in the native Serif .spp format just in case I could rescue the situation.

Great! An email arrived from Serif thanking me for buying Affinity Designer. I'd forgotten about that. Let's see if it can open a Serif .spp file. No it can't, but I took up the invitation to download the beta of Affinity Photo which I installed. Great, I thought, I can remain a loyal Serif customer (after about 20 years).

But would you believe it? You couldn't make this up. It would seem that Affinity Photo does not recognise Serif's own .spp photo file format. That's right. The new Affinity product designed as an upgrade route for those of us using Serif PhotoPlus for years - years - with extensive archives in the native .spp format are cast adrift. Serif obviously just doesn't care about us. I cannot believe this.

Serif PhotoPlus and Affinity Photo are different programs and do not share any code. Affinity Photo is not designed as an upgrade from PhotoPlus, it's a new application aimed at the photographer. We have not added the ability to load PhotoPlus files, because if we did every feature that is saved in the files would need to be read and interpreted in exactly the same way, meaning that Affinity Photo would have to support every saved feature of PhotoPlus. This is not currently possible, sorry.

We recommend that you continue to use PhotoPlus for your existing projects and for the tasks that PhotoPlus is best suited for, and that you use Affinity Photo for new projects that suit Photo's features.

That's fine Patrick as far as it goes. But what about my situation? It's been an issue with PhotoPlus certainly going back some versions (I think I've had them all) - and your tech support confirmed this today too - that the PSD export routine from PhotoPlus has been a source of trouble for a long time.

If you can interpret original PS PSD files into Affinity, and by implication (untested) write them, what's so unique or difficult about processing your very own .spp files, about which you control the format and must know everything there is to know about.

We don't have a 1:1 mapping of PhotoPlus features to Affinity Photo features. We would like the new product to be good for your new projects, but it is not designed to do the job that you need, sorry.

The dozens of software way more expensive -way- that I have purchased and been abandoned totally. You could not even purchase or download anymore, due to company bankrupt or simple change of company direction ! Nendo, Deep Paint 3D (ouch, costed me quite some money), XSI Foundation 4, Amorphium 1 (sigh...precursor of Zbrush.. from other company. I liked it). No legacy converters support, no nothing. Not even purchasable any more, from one day to the other. And those were way more expensive. Even a 3d Studio user can get stuck with some older .max files not opened well anymore in newer versions, after some version numbers go...

It would be great if there is a way to quickly swap between foreground and background colours. While in a masking process it takes a lot time now to swap between the colours. I also miss this option a lot on the destop version. I think with me a lot of other users would agree with me

Press X to swap between foreground and background colours in the desktop version. If you want customise this shortcut go to Affinity Photo Preferences, Keyboard Shortcuts section, set the first dropdown to Photo and the second to Miscellaneous and change the shortcut from the list below (called Toggle Fill Context).

Thanks for your wander. And what about the default key? Just like in photoshop, when je press D it automatically apply black/white for foreground/background color. This is very handy, but I can't find something like that in Affinity

You can also set a keyboard shortcut for it exactly in the same place. Go to Affinity Photo Preferences, Keyboard Shortcuts section, set the first dropdown to Photo and the second to Miscellaneous and set the D shortcut for the following entry: Set Fill to Black and White.

is there still no quick way to swap between foreground and background color on the ipad version?

having quick access to black and white would be very helpful when cleaning up masks with different brushes.

am sorry, a bit new to affinity photo.

is the 'color well' / color studio the color panel to the right side on the ipad version?
if that's so, then it's always open so i can point my pencil to keep switching between the foreground / background color (have set it to white/black)

was wondering if there's a way to switch with just the pencil/gestures without needing the color panel active all the time,
excluding using a keyboard with the ipad, tend to work with it away from the table.

I use that (2.3 apps under Sonoma) in the company on one of my machines, but I don't use Affinity Betas or several parallel Affinity version installments, as it's a waste of drive space for me, which I do urgently need for much more important dev apps, DBs and AppServers etc. - Further I also don't have the free spare time for some realy good testing of other foreign software (Affinity 2.4 betas etc.). As I have to do such things, beside the dev stuff, already on a daily basis for our company's own build software project systems and dependent software here. So the work I'm paid for. - Thus I leave Affinity beta testing to those who have the free time to do that and of course to the Serif employees who's job it is to do so.

Oh dear, long wait for Fujifilm X-H2 support and it isn't right
Any RAW file I open has this garbage all over it (I've tried several from different shoots
Note, highlight, shadow and tone warnings are all turned off
If I make no alterations at all, develop the file the markings are still there, if I then make no changes and export as either jpg or png the markings are on the exported files.
There also seems to be no pre applied curve to the file to replicate the camera settings so the image is very flat, easily fixed with adjustments but that is'nt how most would expect it to be.
