Videofile - to import as video file, you will need to publish as an mp4 from camtasia, which does not include the hotspots. In SL, you can edit a video file only very minimally - trimming, adding captions (though this is easier in camtasia), cropping.

Web object - if you publish for web with built-in player from camtasia, this will include camtasia hotspots. However, this then needs to be hosted on a web server to be inserted as a web object (like you would insert a youtube video) within Storyline, and can't be edited or previewed within SL at all.

One option is to create the videos in camtasia, and cut the videos for exporting at the points where you want to add interaction - so you end up with the mp4 video part 1 inserted to a slide in Storyline, then you add the interaction within SL, then you have the mp4 of video part 2 on another layer or slide in SL.

We just received a license for Camtasia 2019 for Mac, and in past years, I would run the installer through Composer, apply the license key, and then take the compare snapshot, export it as a DMG to Jamf Admin, and everything would work fine.

Today I went to test the deployment and it looks like the install succeeds, but does not apply the license key, which I believe is hidden in a separate file. I have FUT and FEU selected since Camtasia usually drops files in User Folders such as Templates and Sample Projects, which appeared to work.

Hello @spreston I have been successfully deploying Camtasia 2019 via self service and attached, you can see where I place the two key pieces. One in the /Library/Preferences folder, the other in the /Users/Shared/Techsmith folder. Perhaps you could give it a try. I don't use FUT or FEU much any more.

What does the folder "/Library/Application Support/TechSmith/Camtasia 2019" and "/Library/Preferences/com.techsmith.camtasia2019.plist" contains, is it something that comes by default and needs to be deployed for all users?

I am just trying to pkg it for the first time. I just wanted to know do we need to use the composer snapshot to capture all of the files ? or just package the "/Applications/Camtasia.app" and its license key "/Users/Shared/TechSmith/Camtasia/Camtasia Registration Key Unified License" should be fine?

@a.simmons Did that end up working for you? We're having the same trouble.

Techsmith and all enclosed folders have read permission for everyone but it doesn't appear that Techsmith -> Camtasia -> LicenseKey.txt actually gets read. Running the app (2020.0.2) launches the serial number request and a license folder is created in Techsmith -> Camtasia with 4 files.

I use a really easy workflow for handling my Camtasia deployments. Techsmith updates both Camtasia and Snagit on a regular basis. I have AutoPKG download the package installers and add them to Jamf. I have a separate PKG that contains the Camtasia or Snagit Licenses that I created using Composer. Any time that a new version comes out, I switch out the Camtasia or Snagit PKGs in their respective policies. Never had an issue with this workflow.

@GregE I was able to get Camtasia 2020 licensed and working without any issues. I missed the part where TechSmith changed how the license was read in Camtasia 2020 using the LicenseKey file in /Users/Shared/TechSmith/Camtasia. In 2019 and below, a file named "Camtasia Registration Key Unified License" was present. I still stand by my original post in which I keep the Camtasia license package separate from the Camtasia installer package.

I created my LicenseKey file by dropping to the Terminal prompt and navigating to /Users/Shared/TechSmith/Camtasia. I created my LicenseKey file in pico text editor and then saved it. I opened up Composer and dragged my LicenseKey file into the Composer's left hand window. I then made sure that the owner of the LicenseKey file is set to root - this is very important since the user root's userid is always 0 (it showed my username as the owner). Then I set the package name on the left side of the Composer window. Here is what my Composer window looked like before building my license package:

Go ahead and give this method a shot. I have a suspicion that you might be running into an ownership problem with the LicenseKey file, just make sure the ownership is set to user root. I have tested this on both macOS 10.14.6 and 10.15.5. Let me know how this turns out!

Sorted - thanks John! I already had root/wheel set, but did have execute permissions in Composer which I changed to mimick yours above.

Either modifying those perms had the desired effect, or changing the output from .dmg to .pkg and deploying the license separately to the main application but within the same policy fixed the problem we were having.

Cheers!

I have always recorded my Webex meetings and editted them with Camtasia with great success. Recently (September 2022) I cannot edit the recordings cleanly. I lose audio, cannot fast forward without losing audio, cannot edit out small errors, etc. Did the compression change on the recordings?

Does the original Webex MP4 file playback fine? If so, then it may be an issue with camtasia and you may want open a support case with them for help. We noticed an issue around the same time as yours where the audio in the original MP4 file would cut in and out when played back via VLC player; however, when we used Windows Media Player it was fine. Cisco support couldn't figure out the problem.

At the University of Oslo, we are using Camtasia Studio to record and produce mini-lectures. The final product consist of a folder that contains 8 files of the following types: html, xml, css, swf, mp4, png. Is there a simple way to import/embed these into Canvas?

How are you exporting the mini-lectures? There should be an option to export it all as 1 video file rather than separate files. We go that route to produce 1 video file that can then be uploaded into a content page via the Rich Content Editor. See this guide: How do I upload a video using the Rich Content Editor?

A year or two ago, I remember getting an export from either Camtasia or maybe Captivate to load correctly into a Canvas course. If I remember correctly what we had to do was export a zip of the entire project, import that into the Canvas course files area, letting Canvas unpack the zip. Then we embedded the page created by either Camtasia or Captivate into a Canvas page. I know that it is possible but am now hazy on the exact steps. Hope that helps you...

I think Hans' response captures the problem. I had been using Camtasia to record & publish lectures with some interactive features - a clickable Table of Contents that students can use to jump to different slides/markers in the lecture, button to turn closed captions off or on, and, most importantly, embedded self-check questions that students have to answer before moving on. This had worked fine in Canvas in the past - I published the Camtasia project using an HTML5 publishing option, uploaded the entire folder of files to a folder in Canvas, linked to the .html file in that folder, and everything worked fine - on PC, Mac, iOS.

Since the Dec. 19 update of Canvas, however, the interactivity is completely gone. I don't see anything in the release notes that I recognize as related to this problem, so I don't know what changed, or whether there is any point in continuing to try to produce interactive lectures.

After more testing, I found that the interactivity has not disappeared after all (or it's back today - I'm not sure that this was the situation a few days ago). What's happening now is the control bar at the bottom of the presentation has disappeared. So if I click in the areas where I know the control for closed captions, pause/play, show the table of contents, etc., should be, those functions work. However, that won't help students, since they can't see the controls. Even the initial Play button in the middle of the screen is gone.

I tried producing with different appearances of the control bar (different controller theme), but it still doesn't show up. What changed, Canvas? This was working a month ago, and for a couple years prior. I'll try reporting this to our Canvas help system, I was just hoping somebody in the community already had an idea of what might be happening.

I appreciate the SCORM posts, sounds like a great solution for those who want the reporting. Our goal is not to gain the reporting; rather we wanted to provide lectures with a little bit of interactivity built in so students can check for themselves whether they are grasping the material as they go along.

Hi Barb - we are having/faced with the same issue. It seems to be the same with any html pkg [ie from articulate, etc] We have one more desired outcome beyond addressing the missing nav - we would like to have the presentation open in frame on the page at the start [vs having a link] - I suspect this could be done with iframe code but - not sure.
