Located in the legendary outdoor venue in the breathtaking mountain town of Telluride, Colorado, the 42nd Telluride Jazz Festival is set to take place August 3-5, 2018. Combining a rich tradition of preserving the American Jazz art form with an unmatched aesthetic experience, SBG Productions brings a new era to the Telluride Jazz Festival, showcasing three days and nights of world class jazz, funk, soul, folk and gospel, with a goal of community engagement and student education. Unmatched scenery and a musically-charged local culture accompanied by a wide variety of special events including artist workshops, daily winery and distillery tastings, panel discussions, children's activities, cozy late night club shows, and much more will round out the weekend celebration. The historical mining town of Telluride sits nestled in a scenic box canyon at 8,750 feet, surrounded by 13,000 foot peaks, and is a prized gem of the Rocky Mountains.

We all made it to Telluride at different times today. Ashley, Dave and Bridget arrived first and staked out a camping area for us at the high school. We paid for a four day pass to camp here for the 41st Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Chris, Serena, and I brought up the rear around 5 pm, unloaded, popped up our tents and shade tents, and prepared to go into to town to get our music festival bracelets and dinner.

The views of town, Bridal Veil Falls, our campground, the music festival below, as well as the craggy peaks across the valley were magnificent. Part of what makes Telluride Valley so beautiful is that the U shaped valley was carved by glaciers 1.6 million years ago. The glaciers melted around 18,000 years ago, leaving behind the San Juan Mountains, the range in the Rockies.

After a few relaxing hours at camp, we headed back to the festival for a night of music showcasing an excellent lineup including Del McCoury Band, Nickel Creek, and Brandi Carlile. While most of us turned in after Brandi Carlile, Dave and Ashley enjoyed the Nightgrass festivities too! They got tickets to Jason Isbell with The Lone Bellow who played at the high school. It was a great day of hiking and music in Telluride.

Ayisha Jaffer: Yeah. Well, I mean, I like my job, but I would love to join your radio station at some point in the future! I love this beautiful visual that you've created as well. I love the headphones and everything, the music videos, I kind of see just a glimpse on what you're seeing. And I think that's beautiful.

Ayisha Jaffer: I feel like, when I'm hearing this, I'm thinking of Billy Bob Bo Bob, and like creating that gold record that you send out into space that one day might be taken into this other world. I really, it's just making me think of that, like this is like a timeless piece of like a message of connecting. And I think connecting is really the through line to a lot of the work that you do. Because I know you do these love rides, where you're bringing music to people on the street, then you made a whole album with Stay Human that was in the subway system directly with people, and then this album just completely brings in community and connection. And I'm just wondering how you're hoping, how are you hoping it inspires people to connect, or what you foresee that message kind of being spread?

Jon Batiste: Yes, yes, if you're thinking about things in a genre perspective, you'll miss it. Or if you're thinking of it as a world music album, or as something that fits in even a category of just music, you're missing it. It's really a movement of radical love and radical oneness, and thinking of how to manifest that as a way to not only present a live show, but for causes in the world, using the album, using these songs, to power things that happen in the world to really bring people together. You know, there's been already just a range of things. It's so moving to me to see kids singing, whether that's them singing "Butterfly" [co-written with Dan Wilson] and creating different content around songs or initiatives around the song, "Drink Water," bringing clean water to different places around the world.

Dierks Bentley has developed a real love for Telluride, Colorado. He first went out to the majestic location for a Bluegrass Music Festival several years ago. Then, he vacationed out there, and subsequently brought out several songwriter friends for a writers retreat. Inspired by the location, the mountains and the serenity, they wrote songs that would make up his 2018 album, The Mountain. He also recorded the album in Telluride, which is also the place he has held his own music festival a couple of times.
