Create the logo for a communication revolution!

Hi all,

David is going to be presenting the Mesh Potato and the Village Telco
at linux.conf.au (http://www.lca2010.org.nz/) in late January and as
you heard the Mesh Potato will be at CEBIT in March. The time has
come to jack up our look and feel. This is starting with creation of
a logo for the Village Telco. We've launched a design contest for the
Village Telco logo at 99designs
(http://99designs.com/contests/33976/brief).

If you are a creative type, I encourage you to enter the contest. On
the other hand, if you are like me and are graphically-challenged but
know a great logo when you see it, then please help us select the best
logo for the Village Telco by submitting comments either on the site
or to me directly. The contest will run for 7 days.

Also would be great if you could pass news of the design contest on to
anyone you know who might be interested in competing.

Have you considered adding the requirement that the logo should come with or be translatable to a simple monochrome version suitable for e.g. putting in mesh potato case mouldings?

Hi Donald,

I didn't explicitly state it in the design brief but that is one of
the things in the forefront of my mind in finding the right logo.
We've had a lot of entries in 24 hrs, over 100. Do any stand out for
you?

None of them seem to quite float my boat ("place my call"?).

I'd agree with your comment "We're looking for an logo that combines the notion of phones, wireless networking, and a village or community" ... but would say the important things would be voice communication, and a village or community -- wireless mesh is just a means to an end.  If only I could draw...

Wow the number of responses is amazing! I finds the Flintstones font on
#123 curiously appealing and I like the logo on #120/121.

thing I can say in my defense is that we're on a fairly tight deadline
to produce some display materials in terms for Linux.conf.au. That
and the fact that having grown up in the north I still have trouble
associating yesterday's brilliant sunny day in Cape Town with
Christmas. Jack Frost was definitely not nipping at my toes :-)

So, looking at some of the proposed designs... I don't think we're
there by a ways yet but there are some interesting entries.

#61 and #56 work for me from sheer simplicity of design combining
houses and wireless in an elegant way

#44 gives a cool, stylised African feel

#145 has a very creative interweaving of people and mesh although
still too complex as a logo

#134 mixes a super-stylised wireless and house iconic imagery...
doesn't quite work though

#88 I like for its simplicity but may be too simple

#75 I like the 3D feel of this but probably too complicated to be a
fully flexible logo brand

#132 #140 are interesting for combining a handset with a house

Donald is in NZ - close to the date line so his Xmas ends just as many
of you start Xmas :-)

I somehow managed to not even switch on my computer on Xmas day. It

121 is nice but I think Donald has a point in that we will want
something without gradients that will work as well in silhouette. I
have elevated it in the rankings and will make that suggestion to the
designer.

Hi,

I have abut 4 Mesh Potato bugs/feature requests I that I have recorded.
I imagine with the Beta tests starting soon there will soon be many more
bugs and feature requests. It would be good to type these up on some
sort of public database so we can sift through them, compare them of
repeatable, and decide on action and priorities.

I was thinking of using a Wiki page for a start. Or we could set up
something more sophisticated on the Village Telco site.

Any one have any thoughts and/or experience in setting up a bug
database?

The most common system in OpenSource is probably TRAC, which is used by OpenWRT for example.

I have never set it up, but have used it a lot. It seems to be a relatively easy thing to use and customize. Perhaps Elektra knows how to set it up. The LuCI OLSR folks also use it.

Thanks for the input and sorry for the confusion. It wasn't clear to
me where the best place to seek input on this was but it now seems
like the list might be the best option. I've modded up #226

Some new designs that caught my eye are #236 #212 #173

More feedback from any and all who may be interested in this process
would really be appreciated. It is quite a daunting process sorting
through these many options. The majority are awful but sometimes
there is the kernel of something great that can be built on tucked
away in the awfulness.

We'll have a voting process at uservoice.com with the shortlisted ones
at the end.

Hello All,
I would prefer anyone from 199,248,258. The reasons are that they are simple, and they reflect a community. Can they edit the pictures (248 and 258) such that the signals are also beamed out? We expect that the community would also be able to communicate with the rest of the world (PSTN/Cellular).

Just checking the latest and greatest.

- I still like 121. A Flintstones font would be nice. An outline can
be used when gradients are not available. I imagine even on a plastic
box they may be available.

- I also like 425,429,410 & 44 are nice too.

In general the earthy colours work better for me than say #333
