Hello Neighbors,
Here is an update on the figs in the courtyard.
It was cold this month. I wrapped the stems better than last year, but we might loose last years growth, our fruiting wood, anyway. However, the crowns of the plants are probably fine, which means we will have new stems this year, (vegetative) probably starting about June. I hope you enjoy the gorgeous foliage in that case as much as I do.
The first two winters I had them in the ground were pretty warm. I had them wrapped in thin material called remay. The stems lived fine but the fruits came on late and didn't have time to ripen. Thats why we never got ripe fruit. I dont think it had anything to do with fig wasp like I first thought. People who had experience raising figs and getting ripe fruit told me that I need to keep them warmer if I want fruit. It seems the stems need to be kept above freezing, and maybe warmer for earlier fruit. One way this is traditionally accomplished is by digging a hole, bending the stems into the hole, and burying them. The other way is leaving the trees in pots, and bringing the pots in for the winter. For now, I am fine with growing them as annual shrubs and shooting for a fruit crop by wrapping them. I have hope that maybe this way will work eventually.
I hope you enjoy these plants as much as I do. Looking forward to spring!
