The "Heat" setting on the heating units does nothing but turn on a fan to blow more air past the heating element, so it is not a big electical user. It does not add heat to what is already coming out. The water heater, especially if the room your water heater is in is cold, can use a lot of electricity.

I am going to buy this device. My bill is too high and I think this device
might recoup its cost quickly. Keep in touch if you would like to know
too. I will share it with anyone else who wants to know also so we dont
    all have to buy one.

    thanks everyone!

    Ms. Perkins:

I wish to offer some insight on ways to approach this problem. In order to
gain info, there is an expense required. Either you pay an electrician or
you get the tools to do it yourself. It’s not hard, but it can be boring
and tedious. I recommend documenting your findings in spreadsheet.

There is a cost of about $20 - $50 to purchase a watt meter. Radio Shack
sells it and I believe Target had it too. Ace has it as well. (Home Depot
may have it.) This device plugs into the wall, and your appliance plugs
into the device. It acts as an intermediary and records the usage if the
    item plugged in to it.

This is an example of one:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882715001

Then you can go around to all electrical devices and plug them into the
watt meter to see what the usage is. After all is said and done you should
end up with a chart on electrical usage by electric device. You will be
able to easily see what the major electric users are.

Note that this device will not work on light fixtures (high hats, ceiling
fans, etc) or other hard-wired items. Electricians have more robust tools
to measure wattage at the breaker panel.

I don’t expect you to run out to purchase this device, but if you are
serious about electrical usage, this is one safe and cheap way of
    approaching the topic.

Q: Do you have an electric or gas water heater? I hope it is a gas heater.

    Thanks,

    -Isaac

thank you Isaac. I called the fellow at Con Ed and he said the bill covers
5 weeks. I have been using christmas lights too but 517kHw???!!! Its as
much as used by some single family dwellings! Anyway, every month I think
my use is high, like around 400kHw and I dont understand why. I am
conscious of energy use so I am trying to figure out where the sink is. I
know heat flies out my window but the solar gain and the heat circulating
through the building makes it such that I dont need to turn on the heat. I
will let you know if I find out anything more. Thanks again and happy new
    year!

Has anyone looked to see if the usage is estimated or actual?

If estimated, then the number reported may just be an aberration and it
will correct itself when there is an actual reading.

If actual, then I don’t know why it’s higher. (Perhaps people are using an

181kHw as on end of dec 31st! Also, this last bill from Con ed is for 5
weeks. So its a bit more than usual for most of us I would guess.

This seems more reasonable, maybe its the two of us in this apt using hot
water....that hot water heater does seem like a draw..

thanks for your input! keep it coming if you feel inclined!

At one point we discussed solar panels on the roof. What happened with
that? Seems like a good time to get into that if we can. The technology
keeps getting cheaper as the price of energy goes up.

 Hi All,

My husband and I bought and used for 2 months a water dish for our cat that keeps circulating the water for freshness and we noticed our electric bill jumped by almost $30.  The first month we weren't sure what the increase was from but it was around the time we plugged it in.  The 2nd month when it didn't go back down, we unplugged it and our bill went back to normal the following month.  So, it definitely matters what you have plugged in.  The device does sound like a good idea.  Please keep us updated on what you find out.
