Fracking 101: A panel discussion on the health and environmental impacts of the natural gas gold rush in B.C.’s north
Hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as fracking, is the
controversial practice of blasting water, sand and toxic chemicals into deep,
underground shale formations to release natural gas. In the Northeastern corner
of BC, despite rising public concern over health, fresh water and environmental
impacts, the controversial use of fracking in natural gas production is
speeding ahead. Fracking is referred to by some as the “Tar Sands of
Natural Gas” in terms of the water and energy resources needed to extract
the hard-to-reach shale gas deposits. With
one of the largest gas plants in North America being built, a natural gas
pipeline stretching all the way from the Peace Region to Kitimat, and
liquid natural gas (LNG) terminals to be built off the coast to fill up tankers
to export the gas to markets in Asia, the impacts of fracking span the
province.
On November 24th, join the Sierra Club of BC with special guests for a public
panel discussion on the controversial practice of fracking.
Speakers on the panel include:
- Lana Lowe, Director of Lands & Resources with the Fort Nelson First Nation
- Naomi Owens, Acting Land Director and Biologist with the Salteau First Nations
- Irene Merrick, Rancher and Director with PESTS (Peace Environment and Safety Trustees Society) in Dawson Creek
- Ben Parfitt, Resource Policy Analyst with Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives – BC.
- Tim Quirk, Environmental Law Centre
