TheUltra-Nightmare difficulty level has not been removed, with the game now having four difficulty levels, but they skew somewhat tougher than those in Doom (2016). The weapon set is slightly different, with the notable change of the shotgun being the first weapon, and there is no pistol with infinite ammo. To compensate, the chainsaw, which works the same as in Doom (2016) by providing ammo drops from kills, always has at least one fuel. Alternate fire modes returned from DOOM '16 as well and have been rebalanced to make them more viable to switch between. The Doom Slayer is now equipped with a cooldown-style shoulder cannon, which can be used to shoot grenades, ice bombs, or a burst of flame without interrupting attacks. The flame belch stuns enemies and makes them drop armor. The Slayer also has access to a new Blood Punch melee attack.
Doom Eternal has more emphasis on making large jumps and climbs, a bit like a 3D version of classic Super Mario games. With an increased focus on mobility in the game, the DOOM Slayer gains a grappling hook (via the Super Shotgun), the ability to perform two rechargeable dashes anytime, climb walls, and swing from monkeybars. The Slayer still has his twice-jump boots that he picked up in Doom (2016), has further acquired the ability to scale certain roughly-textured walls like an Imp, and soon gains the ability to dash through the air, which combined with jumping, means Doomguy now can traverse large distances of empty air, contributing to the distinctness of the game from Doom '16. Other objects such as field drones and collectible toys make a reappearance.
There is a new feature called empowered demons, in which demons who have killed a player in another campaign will appear in the player's campaign. These demons are stronger than normal but if killed, give better drops. The Playable Demons feature from the Doom (2016) Multiplayer mode now appears in Eternal's Singleplayer campaign as well, once as a sort of demo.
Extra Lives also return from DOOM '16's Arcade mode for use in the main campaign, though have been modified to respawn the player on the spot with no loss in arena progress as oppose to restarting from a checkpoint a limited number of times.[1] The player has the option of turning on "Extra Life Mode" (together with any difficulty level except Ultra-Nightmare) using these Extra Lives like in a classic video game, with permadeath upon using up the last Life.
The multiplayer side of Doom Eternal is called Battlemode and consists of an asymmetrical 2v1 deathmatch, where two players take on the role of a demon, and the third player takes on the role of the Slayer.Within Battlemode, demon players can take on the role of the Archvile, Mancubus, Marauder, Pain Elemental, Revenant, or Dread Knight and use various abilities to defeat the Slayer.
Some time after the events of Doom (2016), Earth has been overrun by demonic forces, wiping out 60% of the planet's population, under the now-corrupted Union Aerospace Corporation. What remains of humanity has either fled Earth or have banded together as part of ARC, a resistance movement formed to stop the invasion but have gone into hiding after suffering heavy losses. The Doom Slayer, having previously been betrayed and teleported away by Dr. Samuel Hayden, returns with a satellite fortress controlled by the AI VEGA, a sort of castle in near-Earth orbit, to quell the demonic invasion by killing the Hell Priests: Deags Nilox, Ranak, and Grav. The priests serve an angelic being known as the Khan Maykr who seeks to sacrifice mankind. The Slayer teleports to a destroyed city in California and kills Deag Nilox, but the Khan Maykr teleports the two remaining priests to unknown locations, forcing the Slayer to continue searching.
After retrieving a celestial locator from the Sentinel world of Exultia, the Slayer travels to Hell to retrieve a power source from a fallen Sentinel known as the Betrayer. He warns the Slayer that humanity's time has come before giving him the power source and a special dagger. VEGA directs the Slayer to a citadel in the Arctic where Deag Ranak has taken refuge, and the Slayer kills him after defeating his guardian Doom Hunters.
In response, the Khan Maykr moves Deag Grav to a hidden location and accelerates the invasion of Earth. Forced to change tactics, the Slayer destroys the Super Gore Nest in central Europe, where the invasion began. With no leads on finding the last Hell Priest, VEGA suggests finding Dr. Hayden, who knows the location of Deag Grav. The Slayer makes his way to an ARC compound where he retrieves Hayden's robotic shell, as well as the Crucible before facing a Marauder, a demonic Sentinel sent to stop the Slayer.
Upon his return, the Slayer's fortress is shut down remotely by the Khan Maykr to prevent any further interference in her plans. She reveals her intentions to resurrect the Icon of Sin, the world-eating super-predator, to consume mankind before having the Slayer attacked by demons. Surviving the ambush, the Slayer uses the demonic Crucible's latent Argent energy to reactivate the fortress and travels to Argent d'Nur to retrieve his own Crucible from his time in the Sentinels.
Further flashbacks reveal that during the ill-fated battle of Argent D'Nur, a rogue Maykr known as the Seraphim had imbued Doomguy with superhuman abilities, transforming him into the Doom Slayer. After retrieving the hilt of the Crucible, it is revealed that the Khan Maykr formed an alliance with Hell to produce Argent energy, which is created through the mass sacrifice of human souls. In return for providing worlds for Hell to invade, the Maykrs receive a share of the Argent energy produced by Hell which allows their own dimension, Urdak, to survive.
Hayden directs the Slayer through Hell's massive citadel, Nekravol, until he finds a portal leading to the Urdak. He then finds the Khan Maykr and halts the awakening ceremony by using the Betrayer's dagger to destroy the Icon's heart. Free from Maykr control, the Icon of Sin awakens from its dormant state and teleports to Earth. With the dimensional barrier destroyed, the Demons break their pact with the Maykrs and proceed to invade Urdak. The Khan Maykr confronts the Slayer, saying that Urdak must destroy Earth to survive. They battle and the Slayer kills the Khan Maykr before taking a portal back to Earth to confront the Icon of Sin, although VEGA is left behind to ensure the portal stays open. After an intense battle across the cityscape, the Slayer kills the Icon of Sin by stabbing it in the head with the Crucible, putting an end to Hell's invasion of Earth. As the Slayer walks away, King Novik, leader of the Night Sentinels, states how the Slayer's fight is "eternal".
Doom Eternal features master levels, which take levels from the campaign and remix them with new enemy and hazard layouts to provide a more challenging experience. At launch, the ARC Complex master level was the only one available, with an additional Cultist Base master level available to players who pre-ordered the game. The Super Gore Nest master level was added on December 1, 2020. The Taras Nabad master level was added on June 29, 2021. The Mars Core and World Spear master levels were added on October 26, 2021, and there are more confirmed to be coming soon, including Hell on Earth, Exultia, Doom Hunter Base, Final Sin, Reclaimed Earth, and Immora.
Doom Eternal is featuring monthly in-game events and challenges split into four separate consecutive weeks which grants different rewards on successful completion of challenges and earning XP through them. Rewards include Slayer, Demon(s) and Weapon(s) Skins and other customizations like Battlemode podium, new profile icons and titles, etc.
The general consensus is that Eternal is more difficult than 2016 due to being more mechanically advanced and complex than 2016 was, often making the players leave their comfort zone and preventing them from going full autopilot and blindly shooting everything, but other than that, "how much harder" it really is, is something only you can answer for yourself by playing both and making up your mind, there are no definitive answers to offer here.
I find the hardest part of Doom Eternal is remembering to use all the tools at your disposal. It took me a while to get into the habit of using the Flame Belch, for example. I can still easily play without using the ice grenades (I don't like them), but that's probably because I play on HMP.
This is the point. I'd say that once you get used to use every tool properly, DE is not really that harder. Demons are harder, yes, but it is compensated with new habilities. If you start playing it like D2016, you're gonna struggle. But once you start using the new things, it's quite similar in terms of difficulty, IMO.
I also keep forgetting to use some of the heavier weapons like the Ballista and the Rocket Launcher. Also I hold onto BFG ammo when I probably should be using it more often. But that's an issue I've had in most Doom games.
Doom Eternal is considerably harder than Doom 2016 because it requires weapon switching & player agency in combat but it does tell people what to do on tutorial texts. But the good thing is that it also gives the player more freedom with its movement and the meathook so there's entirely new layer to the combat. It depends on you how hard the experience is. But halfthrough the game the marauder and later arch-vile appears and this is where the casual aspect of the game ends. Enemies start to get summoned & you have had to have mastered the gameplay to do well. Consider playing it on the easiest difficulty if you're nervous.
I'd say it feels about one difficulty mode harder than 2016 at first. However once you get used to 1) the chainsaw, belch, glory kill, blood punch combat loop, 2) using weapons that exploit weak spots, 3) quick switching of weapons, plus become more familiar with when and where heavies spawn and how to upgrade your suit and weapons, you pretty much become a wrecking ball later in the game.
