The China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP) is located in the Wolong Nature Reserve. For over 20 years the organization has worked for the preservation of the panda population and has now resolved three key problems of breeding which restricted reproduction of the panda for a long time.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has a mission to work with communities to preserve, protect and enhance fish and wildlife habitats for the benefit of the public, says Randy Robinson, instructional systems specialist at the National Conservation Training Center (NCTC) in West Virginia. The Eagle Cam plays a role in that mission.

Research supports this. A 2017 Kansas State University study found that viewers of brown bears via the webcams at Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska were more likely to support conservation efforts than people who came to the remote park to see the bears in person.

After that, the NPS tried hosting a bear cam on its own, but could only afford the capacity for 25 streams at a time, and shut it down. In 2012, the agency entered a partnership with Explore, a multimedia platform that hosts webcam livestreams of wildlife across the globe.

The organization hosts the streams on its YouTube channel and provides financial support for webcam enhancements, such as fuel cells to supplement the solar panels powering the camera system, and a repeater site to add capacity and improve the signal.

The ISS, for example, has six direct streaming cameras, mostly on its exterior, and began upgrading about five years ago from standard-definition to high-definition imagery, Fontanot says. The newer cameras are either Nikon D4s, modified to stream video rather than just take stills, or Nikon D7s.

The cameras also work as wireless access points; helmets worn for space walks can connect with them to Wi-Fi. NASA plans to use them to livestream Earth views from another camera outside the ISS that uploads data to the IBM Cloud Video platform, he says.

On the International Space Station, enclosures holding the exterior webcams contain pressurized nitrogen gas to match the atmospheric conditions of Earth. The ISS circles the globe every 90 minutes; insulated blankets protect the enclosed cameras from extreme cold during the nighttime cycle, as well as during the 250-degree heat of the day.

As Mei Xiang exhibited estrus behaviors, the Zoo received approval for its breeding plans from the China Wildlife Conservation Association and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which monitors giant panda research programs in the United States. Mei Xiang is 21 and near the end of her reproductive life cycle, but there are pandas who have had cubs when they were older than she is now. Based on data from scientists in China and other zoos with pandas, females can breed into their early 20s.

YaYa is 21 years old, still under the average life expectancy of giant pandas in Chinese captivity, which is between 25 and 35 years old, with the record age being 38 years old. She has suffered four miscarriages after invasive artificial insemination procedures, has an ongoing skin mite infestation, and is extremely underweight. She shows severe signs of captivity-caused mental distress through repetitive zoochotic behavior, which can be witnessed by zoo visitors and through webcams.

Despite this unprecedented level of public concern, Memphis Zoo remains resolutely stubborn in refusing to engage with the concerns raised by panda lovers across the world or even have a dialogue with them. Yet this concern has been created by Memphis Zoo itself which show via its webcam, pandas LeLe and YaYa in states of lethargy with disturbing, repetitive behaviour and looking thin and unwell to such an extent which has troubled international panda lovers enough to take over 87,000 actions on their behalf.

Panda Voices is an organization created by an international group of panda fans from Asia, Europe & The Americas, brought together by concerns over pandas YaYa & LeLe. The organization is committed to returning YaYa and LeLe to China, and speaking out for pandas and all animals suffering in captivity.

Tom Clemenson, another representative of Panda Voices added, "We tried to contact Memphis Zoo offering help and donations for the pandas, but to date they have yet to respond to us. Instead, they started blocking all panda fans who leave comments about the pandas or asking questions about YaYa and LeLe on their social media. A great number of active panda fans have been blocked or silenced on their Facebook and Instagram pages. We question Memphis Zoo if putting barriers between the animals and the community, and being completely closed to dialogue is really the best way to deal with this issue. Is the zoo really acting in the animals' interest at all? We do hope Memphis Zoo will be open to have a dialogue with us, be transparent, and willing to improve with the common objective of improving the pandas' quality of life."

There was no highly common body type like I experience at the AVNs, which was refreshing and surprising at the same time.
