Barbara - Welcome to the Group!  We can get you on our main mailing list so that you automatically receive all of our Friday weekly hike notices.  Have you gotten on our website yet?

It lists future hikes as well as past ones.  Also trip reports/photos on “extracurricular” hikes overseas and other places outside the region.  If you can’t access the site for some reason let me know.

Subject: Vigorous Hike for November 4th, Browntown to AT and Back Around

Tuesday, November 4th - 8:30am -  (PATC Map 9).  For those wanting a break from the election (which will be going on that day) I offer some time in the mountains and scenic Browntown Valley.  Given that daylight savings time will end Saturday night, I am tentatively opting to do the shorter version of this hike with 14 miles/2780 elevation gain so that all will be home before dark.  Starting at the Browntown Baptist Church parking lot, we will road walk to the trailhead of the Browntown Trail then up the ridge to the AT.  When we reach the AT we will walk North, over Mt. Marshall, for 5+ miles.  At that point, we will descend on the Jenkins Gap Trail and road walk for another 3.6 miles to the parking lot.
If there is anyone (at least two....or the whole group) who wants to extend their hike (and opt out of the group if we split up) you can continue on the AT over Compton Peak and then turn left on the Dickey Ridge Trail to the Lands Run Gap Trail.  You then descend the ridge and walk back to the parking lot via Routes 622 and 634 (17.2 miles/3500 elevation gain).

To reach Browntown, take I-66 to the Front Royal Exit (or alternatively, take the Linden Exit and Rt 55 to FR) and go through town on Route 340 until reaching the Shenandoah National Park Entrance .  Keep going less than half a mile further south on 340 to the next stoplight which is Browntown Road (Route 649).  Take a left there and drive 7.2 miles to Browntown Baptist Church (GPS coordinates 38.810988, -78.233531).  The parking lot is next to the Church (and in front of the Fellowship Hall) and is really the only paved parking lot of any size in the little village of Browntown.

TO CARPOOL:  Hikers wishing to carpool should meet at the Centreville Park and Ride off I-66, exit 52, Centreville. Arrive early enough so that drivers can depart the lot no later than 7:00 AM.  Go west on Rt 29 taking the 2nd right into the park and ride lot, then immediately turn left to the corner of the lot where our group gathers. (See: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector/riders/stone-road ).  There are not always people interested in carpooling.  If you are new to the group and do not see folks gathering there, continue to the trailhead.  If you let me know in advance that you want to carpool I will let others in the group know.

NOTE:  Please let me know in advance:

 1.  If you will be coming

 2.  If you will meet at Browntown or the carpool site in Centreville.

Once all "declared" hikers have arrived, we will depart, regardless of the time but NLT 0830.  If you have never done this hike before, I would discourage you from arriving late and trying to catch up with us.  The location of the actual Browntown Trail trailhead is very hard to find unless you have been there before.

See you then!     If you need a map plz print out the one attached below and bring with you if needed.  I will have a very limited number with me.
