The hike for this coming Tuesday will be in the American Chestnut Land Trust. This is a county park and has no admission fee. The address is 676 Double Oak Rd., Prince Frederick, MD. We will begin at 8:30.
I am on travel at this point and I won't be able to send an annotated map until Monday. The park map itself can be accessed at
acltweb.org
The park is divided into two sections that are separated by a creek. To get over the creek, hikers use a raft that is moved by pulling on attached steel cables overhead. The raft takes up to three people at a time.
The route will be as follows:
Horse Swamp Trail (it has a boardwalk over the boggier parts) to two bay overlooks
Return to parking area
Left on Turkey Trail to Turkey Spur
Turkey Spur to creek overlook and then return to junction
Left on Turkey Trail, which becomes the Parkers Creek Trail at this point
Go to a spur trail that leads to the creek and take the raft to get to the other side
North/South Trail to Ridge Loop
Left on Ridge Loop to junction with Laurel Loop
Left on Laurel Loop and take the complete loop back to the junction
Left on Ridge Loop to return to North/South Trail
North/South Trail back to the creek
Raft over the creek and left on the spur trail back to Parkers Creek Trail
Left on Parkers Creek Trail to get back to the parking area
As indicated by the description, this route has several turns, so I am asking the group to stay together.
