Manually ordering content items within a channel

I have come across a problem where I need to manually order content
items within a channel, and there is nothing that allows me to do this
(easily) within Vignette.

By manually order, I mean not chronologically, alphabetically etc.

The only solution we have found in to either:

1) Add numbers to the start of content item headings to order
alphabetically in the relevant order

2) Use a content item attribute to order the pages (e.g. a reference
field with 001 in it). This option however causes problems when
content items have to be added to the middle of the list at a later
date, as all the reference fields have to be changed.

I cannot believe there is not an easier way to do this within Vignette
without altering page attributes. Anything similer to the way you can
manually order channels would be helpful.

Any ideas you have would be greatly appreciated.
