At a society meeting held in the Gokuldham Society's community hall, Taarak Mehta informs the residents about the need for an audit. He explains that the primary objective of the audit is to provide reasonable assurance about the accuracy and reliability of the society's financial statements.
The residents decide to hire an external auditing firm to ensure independence and objectivity in the audit process. Bhide, as the society secretary, supports this decision and cooperates fully by providing all necessary documents and information to the external auditors.
The external audit team, consisting of professional auditors, begins by collecting financial records from various sources within the society. Simultaneously, they evaluate the effectiveness of existing internal controls related to financial processes within the society. This includes examining processes related to the collection of maintenance fees, expense approvals, and financial reporting.
The external auditors meticulously examine each financial document and evaluate the effectiveness of internal controls. They focus on the society's financial transactions and the adherence to the society's bylaws. Their evaluation of internal controls helps them determine the extent to which they can rely on the society's financial records.
After a thorough audit, the external audit team compiles a report summarizing their findings. This report includes an audit opinion, which reflects their assessment of whether the society's financial statements present a true and fair view. The opinion may be "unqualified" if they find no material misstatements, or it may be "qualified" or "adverse" if significant issues are identified.
While the audit report primarily focuses on evaluating existing controls, it may also include recommendations for improving internal controls where weaknesses or deficiencies are identified. These recommendations are made with the intention of enhancing financial accountability and transparency within the society.
However the primary responsibility for establishing and maintaining these controls lies with the society's management, including Bhide and other committee members. The audit process serves to evaluate the adequacy and reliability of those controls.
