Itried installing Proton VPN according to your terminal instruction for the CLI-version. The program installed with no problems. However, I had to install it with superuser rights, so I found out I had to write sudo in front of the command.

So somehow I am logged in, even though I did not login personally, and when I try to connect I am am not logged in according to the error messages. I find it really had to understand the logic behind this strange behavior.

I setup free account on Proton VPN and installed protonvpn-cli from the default Tumbleweed repository. I do not get this error, it logs in and connects without problems (OK, I am blocked from accessing Proton VPN server, so I have to use another VPN to access it )

So you may really want to check if connection to Proton VPN is not blocked/intercepted by your ISP. It is also possible that ISP where Proton VPN login server is located refuses connection from your network. What is the result of

That said, when I tried protonvpn-cli connect it just created NetworkManager OpenVPN connection and activated it. So it really is not needed to use Proton VPN, it just offers more convenient interface for selecting server to connect to.

After spending most of the day with no progress at all then I finally came a little closer to a solution. I asked the chatbot (PGT). Here is the chat I had with it: Pastebin.com - Locked Paste

But even though I had a breakthrough then the final step fails. After I have picked the country and the vpn-server I want to connect to the process is stopped with a dialogue box coming up giving me this warning/message:

No mattter if I type my root password or any other password I use into this authentification dialogue nothing happens. And finalle I get this message in the terminal (which is waiting for the authentification):

But well I am optimistic and believe there is a solution around some day soon. I just started using Tumbleweed and it probably takes some time getting to know how the system works.

By the way, I tried contacting Proton but Proton support is not able to help even though I have a paid subscription. They only support the most used platforms which is not openSUSE, unfortunately.

What desktop environment are you using? How do you log into your system (manual login in GUI on console, autologin in GUI, ssh)? Reboot (to keep logs minimal), try protonvpn-cli that fails and then provide full output of journalctl -b as root and journalctl -b --user as your user.

I recently signed up for the Proton package which includes the VPN. I used the protonvpn-cli RPM package from the Protonvpn website, ignored the warning about the missing fonts and the standard integrity warning. It works perfectly!

A lot of things happened during the past days. I was talking to the PGT chatbot and it recommended to set up a new user and try to experiment with protonvpn running on the new user instead of my own private user profile. And actually protonvpn is now working really good with no problems at all. Of course it is a problem that it only works on this new test-user profile.

I might do it some day. Right now I feel like learning instead of doing more complaining. The learning curve is pretty step and I am trying my best. The day I fully understand what is going on I might return to Proton VPN with some kind of feedback regarding my experiences. I have been contacting Proton VPN many times and if you cannot explain them in technical terms what your problem is about then you get no help at all. You really need to direct their attention exactly to the problem before they get engaged. What I am trying to say is that they do not want to help analyze anything or engage in the problem-solving process when you run Tumbleweed or other distroes they not support officially.

I also faced a similar issue! Upgrade not possible due to packages from extra repos installed.

I had to uninstall protonvpn-gui supergfxctl asusctl to be able to upgrade.

On my side I upgraded graphically through Gnome Software/not through dnf

Noted. Can this be outlined further in the documentation ? Upgrading to a new release of Fedora :: Fedora Docs does not mention it for instance.

It would be great if the upgrade process could ask the user to agree to disable non-tested/or all third-party software repos before starting upgrade.

While I agree that it should caution users about potential 3rd party software issues, getting the docs up to date and complete requires the assistance of the entire community as the task is much more than a small team could handle.

Unfortunately, there is a lack of human resources around the Docs, so if you have some time to spare and feel able to manage pagure (the git in which the Quick Docs are currently managed), your help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, for pagure there is currently no guide like we have it for GitLab (the Docs aim to migrate most pages from pagure to GitLab, but this migration has not yet been finished).

I've recently installed Arch onto a lenovo thinkpad t60 and I put Protonvpn on in because i use it on my main windows(not for long) machine. It couldn't connect to a server so because it wasn't necesarry I've uninstalled it. nor pacman or paru find the package so I've deleted the binary and the .pkg.tar.zst files with protonvpn in their names. after that I found that in there remined a vpn connection in my networks and I deleted a file in /usr/lib/NetworkManager/VPN with protonvpn it's name and that removed the vpn connection but didn't fix the problem so I'v also uninstalled openvpn bc on the proton website they say that it uses that protocol. that also didn't work so I've booted off of a live iso and chrooted into the system with a LAN cabel connected to the router (I tried that with the system only but it didn't work) and reinstalled NetworkManager. Idon'ttr know if I've done anthing stupid and I'm out of ideas.

I've have had exactly the same issue with the really bad ProtonVPN arch client. It's frustrating and annoying error. So, if you don't use their VPN once installed, I was not able to browser even with all options offered in the app off. So, when I had to connect to a professional environment with another VPN I couldn't work! It seems that is the pvpn-ipv6leak-protection that it creates and basically fucks the rest of your connections up.

As they say as their blog -ipv6-vpn-leaks/: ProtonVPN applications block all IPv6 traffic by default. So, or you delete this connection that already exists after remove the protonvpn client or disable IPv6 in your system (or Router).

- Remove protonvpn client

- Run nmcli connection show --active

- Remove any reference to the list shown to protonvpn with nmcli connection delete the-name-of-the-connection

- I had this connection without any reference to protonvpn that was the one blocking everything: pvpn-ipv6leak-protection. So, you have to remove it as well: nmcli connection delete pvpn-ipv6leak-protection

- Remove (forget) the WIFI to which you were connected. I realised about this because I was connection through my 5G WIFI connection and with the regular 2G I hadn't any problem,.

- Restart

- Set up again your WIFI connection

But they still refuse to refund. How could they do this? In their terms and conditions, they offer 100% money back guarantee but they waive my refund right because i open a dispute with third payment party - paypal. Now, The paypal dispute has closed but they still refuse to refund me. This is truly unethical.

Protonvpn has several packages. One of them is free. In my opinion protonvpn is the only reliable VPN (they are from the same creators of Protonmail, one of the most used emails after Gmail and well known on the deep web).
