[vnforum] - Mesg from Tran Dinh Hoanh <hoa...@erols.com>

Dear All,

I agree with the Greenpeace's position in this article that hunger and
malnutrition are not so much a problem of production as a problem of
distribution. The notion that genetically modified foods will cure the
developing world's hunger and malnuttrition problem is deceptive. As
long as the world cannot solve the inequitable distribution of wealth
between the South and the North, hunger and poverty will remain at
astounding proportion. Technologies cannot solve social problems
arising from the human heart.

Have a great day, all!

Hoanh

Genetic engineering will not feed world -Greenpeace

MANILA, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Genetic engineering will not solve the
problem of hunger and malnutrition in developing countries, the
campaign coordinator of Greenpeace in Southeast Asia said on
Wednesday. ``It is irresponsible, if not downright deceptive, to
claim that increased global output of food via genetic engineering is
going to help the 800 million people who suffer from hunger and
malnutrition today,'' Greenpeace coordinator Von Hernandez said in a
statement in Manila. ``Hunger is a problem of distribution, access
and poverty in parts of the developing world,'' he added. Greenpeace
made the statement as the global community prepares to mark the first
World Food Day of the new millennium next week.

Hernandez said that even if genetic engineering delivered its promise
of high-yielding, disease-resistant crops to the developing world, it
was unlikely that this would benefit starving populations. ``We
cannot solve a social problem with a biotechnical fix,'' he added.
Environmental groups such as Greenpeace have been campaigning against
genetically modified (GM) crops because of fears about their effect
on the environment and human health. But biotech companies have said
such fears are unfounded as studies done on GM crops have not shown
adverse effects. ``With European markets shunning GMOs (genetically
modified organisms) and opposition to these products mounting in
North America, the biotech industry is now actively promoting their
technology in Asia in the hope of cashing in on the region's market
potential,'' Greenpeace said.

Genetic ID Company findings force Kraft to recall products from US
market
[...]
In September, Dr. Fagan's company, Genetic ID, found that a batch of
grocery store taco shells sold by Kraft Foods, a unit of Philip
Morris, were made with a genetically engineered corn that had not
been approved for human consumption. The findings forced Kraft to
recall millions of taco shells and reignited a long-standing debate
over the safety and labeling of genetically altered foods.
