Hi friends,
The auction mentioned below is going on right now at EBAY. One porcelain
bowl is currently being bid at $2600.

Vietnam to Get 20% of Auction Cash
The Vietnamese government will receive 20% of the take from a massive
overseas auction of 15th- and 16th-century Vietnamese ceramics that is due
to take place this month. The ceramics were dredged from the sea near the
ancient town of Hoi An with the help of a Malaysian firm. More than 25,000
items were due to go on the block in San Francisco from October 11-13, with
another 60,000 slated for auction on-line via e-Bay from October 14. Items
range in value from $200 to $100,000, according to estimates by the auction
house, Butterfields. Vietnam's Ministry of Culture and Information says
Hanoi has already decided what it will do with its share of the proceeds:
upgrade Hoi An and the nearby Cham ruins. A bigger problem is how to show
off more than 24,000 items remaining in Vietnam. A government team has
already divided them among five museums, but many will stay in storage for
lack of display areas. No more than 10% of the ceramics will be on show at
any one time, predicts Dang Van Bai, director of preservation and museums at
the ministry

Is there any explanation on why VN will only get 20% of the take ? That
sounds really really low for national treasures !

Is it not a reflection of a risk-reward ratio: from what I recall,
the Malaysian company carried all the expenses and risk of the
exploration to locate and recover the treasures. I could, of course,
be mistaken
