Jailed American in Vietnam says awaits execution
2000-10-14 04:19:27 GMT (Reuters)
HANOI, Oct 14 (Reuters) - A U.S. citizen of Vietnamese origin, who was
sentenced to death for murder by a court in southern Vietnam, has asked to be
executed without appealing for presidential clemency, official media reported
on Saturday.
The Thanh Nien (Young People) newspaper said Nguyen Dinh Xung, a former lawyer
from the United States who was convicted of murder by a court in Ho Chi Minh
City in late August, has made a written request to be executed.
The paper said Xung murdered his wife in June 1999 in a hotel in the former
Saigon by stabbing her 29 times. He testified at his trial that he killed her
due to jealousy. It gave no further details.
Under the Vietnamese legal system, once all court appeals have failed a person
sentenced to death has 15 days to seek clemency from the president.
Executions in Vietnam are carried out by firing squad
