Vietnam headteacher jailed for selling school diplomas

HANOI, Oct 12 (AFP) - A headteacher in Vietnam's third city of Danang has been
jailed for five years for selling foreign language certificates, officials said
Thursday.

Ho Duy Trinh, director of the city's foreign languages insititute, was found
guilty of "forging state and social organization's documents" and "defrauding
and seizing civic properties," a city education official told AFP.

Between 1993 and 1999, he illegally granted 400 foreign language diplomas in
return for gifts in cash or kind.

He took another 10,400 dollars from his students on the strength of baseless
promises to help secure them places on an Australian scholarship scheme, the
official said.

Corruption has become widespread in Vietnam's schools and universities in
recent years. The official media says the use of fake diplomas is widespread,
even among state employees.
