Community of Local Affiliates Studying the Past (CLASP)
Gathering of Historical and Heritage Societies in Southeast Asia
Bayview Hotel Georgetown Penang, Malaysia
3-4 August 2026
The Seasrep Foundation is pleased to invite you to a gathering of historical and heritage societies in Southeast Asia on 3-4 August 2026 at the Bayview Hotel Georgetown Penang, Malaysia. Seasrep is a thirty-year old non-profit organization that seeks to advance studies of the Southeast Asia through collaboration with individuals, groups and institutions in the field of Southeast Asian studies.
This Seasrep initiative, called CLASP (Community of Local Affiliates Studying the Past), highlights the role of local historical and heritage societies in producing knowledge about Southeast Asia through studies of local history, the preservation of collective memory and appreciation of Southeast Asia’s rich heritage. CLASP seeks to connect these local initiatives across the region, recognizing that knowledge about the past is produced through multiple practices, perspectives, and forms of expertise.
Over the years, local historical and heritage societies have emerged in many parts of the region, driven by shared interests in history, memory, heritage preservation, and community identity. These groups organize commemorations, undertake heritage conservation, conduct research, collect oral histories and memorabilia, and engage the public through both physical and digital platforms. Through these activities, they generate knowledge that is rooted in local experience yet also speaks to national and regional histories. The CLASP inaugural assembly aims to provide a regional space where such societies can meet, exchange experiences, and reflect collectively on their work as producers and beneficiaries of knowledge.
Invitation to Participate
Each society may register at most two participants. The program consists of workshops and sharing sessions that explore different modes of engagement with the public as well as challenges, methodologies, and possibilities for collaboration within and beyond national boundaries. In keeping with CLASP’s emphasis on learning from place and practice, the assembly will also feature a guided walking tour in Penang, highlighting the site’s rich local historical and heritage and situating discussion within the city’s layered histories.
Registration
The registration fee is U.S. $60, which covers the program, the guided walking tour, and meals during the assembly and dinner on the first day. Kindly register through this link: <https://tinyurl.com/CLASPRegistration>. Note that basic information about your society is part of the registration information, which will be shared with the participants. A simple database of historical and heritage societies in Southeast Asia will support CLASP’s future networking, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
