Pegged to what's happening to what people are eating - and food they export - in today's Vietnam, here's my latest Substack on what's seriously lacking there now.  The loss of those traditional values is often spoken about amongst the older Vietnamese I know, both in the diaspora and back in Vietnam.  A bit harsh, I admit, but I've earned this opinion in my own experience then and now.

I remember this issue from when I was living there and had a running list of reported dodgy products.

Bubble Tea: Tapioca balls substituted with plastic (blamed on China)
Chilli sauce: Orange lead paint added for colour
Coffee: Actually some kind of sump oil with caffeine and coffee flavour added
Fried shallots: In reality bits of sweet potato

Meanwhile you couldn't go to a backpacker bar without some idiot tourist convinced their hamburger "was actually definitely dog". Dog meat typically costs far more, of course.

Dear Carl,

Great article. Much of the moral degradation in the younger generation is happening beyond the communist borders. There is a price on morals.
