The exchange about a site mgr and censorship reminds me of the
occasional fractiousness in the press gaggle which was often split
into the anglo v. the continental press which was often led by a
French gentlemen.

The answer is to resurrect one of those French fellows to be the
arbitrator then everyone will be happy --- just like the olde daze.

PS: anyone have a contact for photog Jacques Tonnaire?

Cheers, Matt Franjola - antique barn restorer in rural northwest CT.

Hi, Matt, welcome on board ! Yes, that was quite a prominent
division in the old press corps. (And then there was the one between
the "heads" and the "boozers" !!!) Fortunately, with my fluent
French, i was able to wander between the two camps and had quite a few
froggy friends. We must track them down for inclusion .

AP had a whole army of French photo stringers, including Jacques
Tonnaire, an ex-para in Algeria who'd got caught in the '62 OAS stuff
and ended up in jail; he was sprung on condition he'd work as a
mercenary in South Yemen. When his contract was up, Jacques and a few
others came to Saigon and became freelancers. (Kennerly/etc, a few at
UPI too, no?!) You always wondered what old Jack Thunder was up to
on his long forays out in the field, usually with ARVNs and return
with just a couple rolls of film. We kept in touch for years and he
actually visited Australia back around '87 and we spent a lot of time
together. He'd got a job as a forest ranger down on the riviera.
Last heard from about five years ago, he was suffering from rheumatoid
arthritis and could barely write. I've tried calling but no reply and
fear he may not longer be amongst us. He was tough wiry little guy.
His yarns certainly beat anything you could've got off a DVD for the
night's entertainment !!! (Did the art of conversation die with
Vietnam too, folks?!) Cheers, Carl

Hi, Matt. Welcome aboard. Restoring antique barns in NW Connecticut
sounds interesting, to say the least. Probably beats reading
government pablum and trying to correct the errors (my role these
days).

Thank you again, Matt, for getting this conversation going about our
french colleagues. There were some very strong friendships there,
especially over in Cambodia. Apologies about Claude Arpin, Jon, but
i was just scratching mhy head madly to remember old names & faces.
(There were a couple other ex-mercenaries who came out with Jacques
who also took up photography.) So sad to hear about Francoise.
(Thanx John for the afp story too!) I'll zap an invite to Yves.

Say, Jon and others, do you know what ever happened to that 1st
Secretary at the French Embassy in Phnom Penh, sort of acting
ambassador and/or charge d'affaires most of the time, who used to
engage in decidedly most undiplomatic activiites down at Chatale's ?
Name forgotten, unfortunately, and did he have a career after all
that. And Ranji too, the Malaysian charge with a French wife ?
What a fellowship we shared!

Anyone have an email or contact for Marie-Laure de Decker?  She had an apartment on Ile de la Cite in Paris in the 90s but I have not heard from her since.

What about Jean Jacques Cazaux??  Laurent Chevalier??

Maybe I missed some names in this flurry of messages about French correspondents, but let us not forget Francois Sully, long-time Newsweek corr, who lived and worked out of the Eden Building, died in helicopter crash that killed Gen. Do Cao Tri. And then there was Felix Bolo of AFP, who later showed up in Tokyo as AFP buo chief there.
As noted, perhaps these names were listed -- but I didn't see them, wanted to be sure.

Thank you, Don, and welcome aboard also ! Plse scroll up to start of
the discussion here. We are basically trying to track down surviving
French colleagues and, of course, get them signed up too. (Francois
Sully was a true legend, sorely missed and thankfully included for his
photographic skills also in Requiem.) Oh, and reminiscing too, of
course.

Do you know if Felix Bolo and any other AFP guys who might still be
out there and how we could contact them? We'd love to have them here
too.

1st secy Fr. emb in PP - Louis Bardolet. he, Ranji and Beth becker
were a gang of 3 at Chantal's.

ex-wapost friend in Saudi has Sarah Errington contact info. I spoke to
Sarah on phone 2 yrs ago when she visited WX DC. She was as cheery as
ever and has "fond" memories of her post-sgn fall tryst with John
Edwards of LD Daily Mail.

I wonder how Polish Charge" in PP who gave great vodka tasting parties
made out after fall of USSR. He was a KGB major, but being Polish that
probably meant a second team intel guy. Forgot his name.

Is ex-der spiegel guy Tetiano (sp?) still among the living? He was ass-
kissing NVA in sgn after fall but I heard he changed his mind after
living hanoi later on. He should have stuck it out as VN now a defacto
consumer-capitalist society where he can get a good brioche and maybe
some boom-boom.

Thinking about post-war end trysts it reminds me of a VN electronics
gal who lived near TSN airport. Very bright lady who was a friend of
Doug Sapper (ex-sf sgt and construction worker who lured her into his
place using his pet otter as a lure) and helped me with VN technical
vocabulary in 1971-73. Her english was good. Lost contact after I went
to PP. Lo and behold at sgn victory day parade shortly after 4/30/75 I
see her as head of her district's VC committee. She gives me a wink
and says she not too happy with the "Bac Ky" - strange northerners
taking over and bossing the VC around. and so it goes. Matt

This is a true anecdote about Tiziano. One night in Delhi, Tiziano,
John Burns of the NYT, and I were having dinner at John's house,
when, for some reason that I don't recall, the name Oriana Falacci
came up. In that instant Tiziano jumped up, grabbed his balls and ran
around the table howling. When he sat back down a stunned John Burns
and I asked what that was all about. Tiziano said, "When you hear
some names, there is no other choice than to grab your balls and run
away screaming."

Re Ed Van Kan.  He is now a painter having exhibited in the Hague, Berlin, Paris. He is meeting with some success and is increasingly selling. As a matter of fact, I have one of is paintings in my living room.  Budda reading the evening news. Van Kan lives in France but also has an apartment in Amsterdam and he and his wife Madline stayed with us for a while last winter in Florida.

One of my favorite stories about Van Kan and Vanes concerned a  sailboat which Van Kan and I shared in the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club.

Early one morning before the Star Ferries were running my cameraman and I paid a couple of Sampans acrosss the harbor with something like eighteen cases of camera gear film etc to catch the erarly morning flight back to Saigon.

Van Kan and Vanes were taking our sailboat up to Macao. As we crossed the harbor before we couldeven see it in the early morning dusk we could hear vanes shoujting at Van Kan....don't you know how to sail this f.....g thing.  And then liuke a ghoest ship she sailed across our bowen route to Macao. We went off to Saigon and forgot about it almost immediately going up country for a week or so.

I was walking down tu do street and the BBC correspondet, Tony Laurence callled fro9m across ther street did you hear what happened to your boat.

risking life and limbe to cross the Saigon street Laurence told me the story.

After we saw them on our departure monring Van Kan and Vanes headed upriver. To get to Macao they had to sail thru Chinese waters and a Communist gunboat came alongside ordering them to stop. Van Kan ordered Vanes to lower the sails. Vanes said I dont know how to lower the f.....g sails. Van Kan said you steer then Ill lower the sailes. Vanes stored our boat Nordica right into the gunboat breaking oiff our bowsprite and bob stay. Accoring to Van Kan the soldiers on the boat came aboard with their ak47s at the ready while vanes is muttering under  his breath "f.....g communists. Van Kan however had a Mao poster pinned up on a bulkhead doanw below. When the gunmen saw this they gave them coffee and towed Nordica tothe pier at Macao. And yes, they were flying the flag of the Netherlands,

American yachts who were making the same cruise at the sam,e time spent something like two years in captivity in Canton.

This thread cannot end without mention of Kathy Leroy.  Others have written about her using more words that I ever learned but one personal aside.  We were always in awe of Kathy but, I guess because of her size, looked on her as a kid sister.

I was filling in for the Tel Aviv bureau chief and trying to be sociable at a party at Bob Simon's house.  I was standing making a doomed attempt at small talk, drink in hand, less than captivated audience around when, seemingly from the ground I slugged in the jaw.  I looked down to see Kathy glaring at me and hissing, "you are a sheet".  She turned and disappeared in the party and I did not see her again for years.  My "audience" seemed to have never before heard somebody called a sheet so we returned to the boredom of our discussion.

The years between seeing her passed and I could not help but ask, "Why the fuck did you call me a sheet and while were on the topic, why did you slug me?"  I will not try to type her frog accent but she said, "Ah, when you were a photographer you were a friend but as soon as you became bureau chief you became a snob sheet."
I asked her how she could  say that since I had not seen her since VN and my assignment to Paris.  She told me that she had carried some material to Paris, for CNS News, from somewhere and that when she called the bureau I just said that I would send someone to collect it, thanked her and hung up.  Oh shit, I remembered a call from a female frog many years ago.  That female started the call, "allo, keet, Katreene Lee Waha here...."  I told  her  that I never knew a Katreene Lee Waha and that if anybody had become a snob it was her for changing her name.
I don't think she ever forgave me, in fact, I don't think Kathy ever forgave anybody and I will never forget her.

Another three French freelance photographers from Saigon have come to
mind. All worked for AP mostly. As Jeff Williams notes re that photo
under discussion, Ghislain Bellorget, was a former "co-operant" -- men
who did their alternative military service in various professions,
mostly teaching -- who was in Vietnam for some years, departing around
'71. (I last saw him in Paris in '72.) Claude Johner was a
photographer who became fascinated with sounds, bought himself an
expensive Nagra and wandered all around SVN those last couple years
playing soundman. He was still in Saigon at the Fall in '75 and i'd
imagine he must've lost e'thing. (Any of the stay-behinds remember
him?!) Finally, there was Jean-Paul Labbe (accent aigue on the 'e'),
nickname The Twitch, for his mad habit of twitching as he spoke, like
a physical stutter. (Funny, he didn't twitch when he was stoned
though.)

Jon, apc any help tracking down old AFP types -- and others, of course
-- much appreciated. And we haven't started on the other Poms --
Brits -- yet !

Dieter stayed in Vietnam/ Cambodia until 1975..in fact he was one of the 'stay-behinds' in April '75, wielding a film camera for CBS News.

He hung around S.E. Asia for some time after the war (s) & eventually moved to India. I saw him there during the Indira Gandhi assassination coverage. Last rumoured sighting is that he is running a guest house in Dharamsala ( current home of the Dalai Lama).

I heard some years ago dieter ludwig was in Manila. Denis Gray may
know more.

Have a number a good stories about Dieter but only one here: Two mid-
to late teen Cambo girls one dark skinned the other light skinned
called salt and pepper by those who knew them as a tag team. They
were rambunctious, energetic and couldn't ever be still. Someone asked
Dieter how how managed with them. He replied in good heavy german-

Dieter Ludwig blew in from Goa to VN in '71... was a stringer for
UPI--liked to go into the field wearing flip flops--was a ballsy guy,
had a nice temperament--with no apologies to Faas, gave Germans a good
name...

Carl:

Paul is in Arizona.  We might be working on a story together in Costa Rica this month.  I think he is a member.  If not, I'll invite him.  Would also like to invite Marv Wolf who was a 1st  Cav PIO NCO during Ia Drang.  He has written probably a dozen books.

Thanks for clarifying Labbe's ailment, dhk. Amazing really how he
handled it and worked as a photographer. RE Dieter, not quite sure
what your description of his giving germans a 'good name" means but
back then double-double-you-two wasn't that long before, eh? Now,
they're all good ! It wouldn't be bad tracking him down. I'm sure
time with the Dalai Lama would've mellowed quite a bit. Cheers, Carl

Hi Annie
Nice to hear from you. Sorry to take so long to reply, I was in bonnie Scotland...
Haven't found much yet, but hope next week to see someone in the 'Amicale des Anciens AFP', a club for retirees, who might know what's going on. Even though I'm the senior person in the English service, I don't know what's happened to these people and there are few still around who might know.
Taking the names mentioned: it looks as though Jean-Jacques Cazaux is retired, as is Laurent Chevallier, a couple of people said Felix Bolo is dead (though they weren't sure) and Francois Pelou might be in Brussels.
I did get one new name, who was in Vietnam for five years: Jean Claude Chapon (jcch...@hotmail.com) is working with me overnights!
Anyway, if I can get out in the daytime Monday or Tuesday I'll see if I can get any more for you on the oldtimers -- but no promises.
I'd love to see you again in Paris, but hope to be back in Honkers soon, maybe in October. Was very sad to miss Hugh's wake but for work reasons there was just no way. Some kind person sent me The Correspondent, so I could see what a great occasion it was.
Lots of love, and regards to anyone interested

Brian
