Hi Carl… I am arriving Saigon April 26 Sunday 1235 AM on UAL # 867 from SFO via HKK (UAL # 117-operated by Air Vietnam or Cathay, I assume) and hope to be picked up or met at that very early hour…

I covered Vietnam from 1967 - 70 for CBS, (6 mos in Cambodia) as a cameraman, and in 1973 as a field producer / buro mgr… Also in 1990's with Bill Kurtis for A&E docs on MIA's and Cambodian Genocide.

I've passed this info on to Tung Pham.

Thanks,

"Skip" Brown

OK, folks, here is our more or less complete list of those attending this coming week's Vietnam Old Hacks Reunion in Saigon under the general imprimatur of Vietnam Foreign Affairs-sponsored "Foreign Press Week in HCM City - 25 April to 1 May 2015." Most are staying at the Rex Hotel but not all. We have 24 participants, plus wives and relatives.

Tim Page and myself are planning a Friday 24 April arrival in Saigon so will be on-hand to welcome you.

Dates of arrivals vary and so let's make this message a gathering point with your personal dates of arrival in Saigon -- and I'm sure you're also in touch with Mr Tung at FA. Not all will be there on 25th and, right now, I have Peter A on 26th; Ut on 27th; Edie Lederer and Ray Wilkinson on 28th.

Fyi, we are already generating lots of media interest -- including Reuters, AFP and AP -- and this list will be passed along to others. So, if I've got dates & affiliations wrong, please advise me asap. If this is anything like 2010, I'll also end up playing PR for the group and getting as many of your stories told as possible.

I look forward to seeing you in good ol' Saigon.

Best regards,

Carl

Lance Woodruff <lance.w...@gmail.com>: Apr 21 08:10PM +0700

Hello Carl and all,

I should adjust my Old Hacks listing.

I was accredited as correspondent of the US National Council of Churches,
employed by Church World Service (its international relief and development
arm), which together with Lutheran World Relief and the Mennonite Central
Committee formed Vietnam Christian Service, which we first called VCS.
Because VCS looked like something else, we went Vietnamese-style for Viet
Nam Christian Service (VNCS). VNCS was not a missionary organization, but
what would now be called an NGO. I was information officer and visited
Quang Ngai, Tam Ky, Nhatrang, Pleiku, Dak To, Quang Tri and Di Linh where
we had American and Canadian doctors, nurses, social workers and community
development specialists posted.

I free-lanced with Empire News. Hal Ellithorpe and Paul Avery assigned me
to cover R&R in Bangkok and Singapore (some Singapore Girls in 1967 were
short-time GI companions, not air hostesses). An Empire News assignment in
Bangkok helped me meet my first wife, who now lives in suburban Cleveland.
I spent some 'quiet time' with Bob Ellision's chest of photo gear after he
was killed in Khe Sanh. Like the Mennonites and Quakers, I became anti-war,
but in San Francisco, the men and women of Swords to Plowshares told me I
was a veteran too, though I was never in the military.

Before going to Saigon I worked for the Cleveland Press, a Scripps-Howard
paper. In Danang I met Scripps-Howard's Jim Lucas, who introduced me to the
Marine Press Center.

-Lance Woodruff. US National Council of Churches/Church World Service.
Vietnam Christian Service. Empire news. 1966-68. Asian Christian Service,

Looking forward to see you all in Saigon.

vietnam memories by one of britain's finest journalists.

but those photo captions. wasn't that first picture in fact taken in danang
and the last of the fix winged aircraft to leave that city.

and then the caption on the helicopter rooftop evacuation. i know there was
a huge discussion on this sometime back. seems confusion continues to
reign.

Thanks for posting this, Ray, and definitely the best piece yet on the Fall
of Saigon -- especially as he stayed on afterwards and then gives such a
great analysis. What a superb writer!

While the words "mistake" and "crime" are way over-used and which I
personally avoid using, Martin gives them a powerful definition in this
sentence at the end of a fantastic 'catch-all' sorta' graf.

The plain fact that the American war in Vietnam was a mistake and a crime –
because it was undertaken so lightly, pursued so brutally and abandoned so
perfidiously – is about the only plain fact there is.

not Danang or Saigon and it is definitely fixed-wing, not a

Hi, Ray, and thanks for the briefing on what you've been up along the old DMZ. Serves them tourists right for thinking it'd be real cool to ride in an open jeep. (And yes, you know it's all over when those lovely-as-ever women are calling you "uncle" and "grandpa".) Sorry for not getting back earlier re Le Ly Haslip who'd be most welcome to join the Group of an evening on the Roof of the Rex any night of the week. But I'm sure the evening of the 29th will be the biggie.

Look forward to seeing you on the 28th.

thats great. right now the weather is totally mixed. a week ago we had rain that we shouldn't have had. i spent the weekend in hue and it was miserable, rain, rain, rain. the only fun i had was watching some silly tourists who wanted to get a feeling of the war by riding around in reconditioned american jeeps and got more than they bargained for. i haven't seen this on such a large scale before but in saigon a few weeks ago i noticed entire fleets of jeeps drawing up to various hotels, the caravelle included, to take tourists around the city by jeep convoy. the craze has spread to danang. i was standing on the steps of my hotel (the wonderful la residence) when another fleet of jeeps drove up from danang. but it had pissed down all the way and the only cover the tourists had were thin vietnamese style pac-a-macs. they looked like drowned rats. i know all too well how they felt but i had to chuckle to myself. i don't think they will be taking too many rides in jeeps anymore.

anyway, from the rain we have now suddenly gone into sweltering mode. today it was nearly 40 degrees and hot hot hot. theoretically it is the start of the hot season here so i can only anticipate it will be like this now for the foreseeable future. not pleasant, but at least we are not walking out in the boonies swallowing salt tabs. i'm gonna stay a couple nights en route down to saigon at la residence which is turning into my favorite hideaway haunt.

no miss right in sight. there's still some beauties around and i could easily fall fast. but i aint gonna do another chika and the ones i do like...quite young...are interested in me as a grandfather figure and not as a swashbuckling lover. i am resigned to remaining celibate for the rest of my days.

the teaching is up and down. i really like reacting with kids and trying to pass on 'the knowledge' but because of bad planning by my NGO i am not sure i am being truly effective. but its still fun.

i arrive in saigon on the 28th and staying at the continental. i am going to see le ly Haslip. we are either gonna have dinner ourselves on the 29th (with anyone who wants to tag along) or if there is an appropriate hack get together i will invite le ly to that. but as i said in earlier message when i suggested people might want to meet her in a low key drinks or dinner session i didn't receive a single reply so i assume none is interested. its always all a little cliquish at things like this and i don't have the time to waste on that.

Say, Tony, you'd better double-check with Tung re your hotel. We've now
been moved to the Huong Sen down old Tu Do Street, now Dong Khoi, 68-70.

You'll be first into Saigon!

will do tony. but i just realized i committed a stupid booboo. i thought i
was replying to pringle in a private email but somehow i routed it to
everyone. i have never in my life committed such a stupid thing and though
it wasn't totally incendiary it was a little embarrassing.

reminds me of that idiot stephen smith when he sent an email to all the
wallendas destroying alexis gerber's bid to become foreign editor in the
most sexist and demeaning terms. but he also sent it to alexis who burst
into his office one saturday morning threatening all kinds of legal
actions. he didn't last long after that.

christ i will be more careful in future.

Carl Robinson <robinso...@gmail.com>: Apr 21 06:28PM +1000

Those signed up for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs "Foreign Press Week"
would have received a personal message from Mr Tung Pham a short while ago
to advise that we will now be accommodated at the HUONG SEN HOTEL, instead
of the Rex Hotel as originally indicated.

I hope no one is unduly disappointed or put off by this last-minute
decision but the Huong Sen -- located half-way down old Tu Do Street, now
Dong Khoi St towards the Saigon River -- should work just as well. It's
also located a bit further away from the huge construction site just below
the Rex for the city's new subway system. It's a good 3-star hotel and
also has its own rooftop bar -- with probably cheaper drinks. (Also a
smaller property so e'one will know right away who we are.) KD and I know
the place from our previous trips.

So -- a new Reunion HQs in Saigon.

Cheers!

Recall Woody Dickerman stayed there during the war -- and David Butler made
it the setting for his unpublished "Murder on the Rue Catinat." Was
noteworthy for having a swimming pool -- wonder if that''s still there.

Actually, I think Huong Sen will work quite well -- smaller and less
pretentious than the dolled-up old Rex BOQ -- and the pool's still there.
It's the sorta' place we should be able to take over! And we'll
definitely raise a glass or two to Woody, David and other old colleagues.

Now, this is seriously weird, folks. Just as the US & South Vietnamese
Invasion of Cambodia began in early-mid May 1970, this US Navy Swift Boat
dropped this fellow claiming to be a freelance photographer off on a Mekong
Riverbank near Neak Luong, s.e. of Phnom Penh,

Personally -- and I knew a lot of freelance photographers in Vietnam and
Cambodia, including a few crazy ones -- but the fellow does not look at all
familiar to me. A couple cameras and one of those Lao-style string bags.
What the hell was he doing?

Anyone can help out?

Here's some background of the story -- and a picture:

Hello, Carl -- Guy Gugliotta here, formerly of UPI and The Washington
Post. Bob
Kaylor put me in touch with you folks. A friend has asked me to see if I
can ID a freelance photographer from Cambodia days.My friend was a swift
boat officer during the Cambodian invasion and dropped the shooter off on
the banks of the Mekong near Neak Leaong in May of 1970. He took a picture
of the fellow, who had two Nikons and was looking for "the action." If you
send me a return e-mail at my address (above) I can send you the picture of
him, which, I'm afraid leaves something to be desired. Nonetheless, I'm
hoping it can ring some bells. All best/Guy

I for one would very much appreciate seeing a film about your Dad. Your father’s work on both Vietnam and China were very much an inspiration to me.

Hi Carl —

Thank you for letting me join this forum. I enjoyed watching the film on Matthew Franjola and found it moving. A year ago, I made a similar film about my father, Stanley Karnow. Would you like to see it?

Now, this is seriously weird, folks. Just as the US & South Vietnamese Invasion of Cambodia began in early-mid May 1970, this US Navy Swift Boat dropped this fellow claiming to be a freelance photographer off on a Mekong Riverbank near Neak Luong, s.e. of Phnom Penh,

Personally -- and I knew a lot of freelance photographers in Vietnam and Cambodia, including a few crazy ones -- but the fellow does not look at all familiar to me. A couple cameras and one of those Lao-style string bags. What the hell was he doing?

Anyone can help out?

Here's some background of the story -- and a picture:

Hello, Carl -- Guy Gugliotta here, formerly of UPI and The Washington Post. Bob Kaylor put me in touch with you folks. A friend has asked me to see if I can ID a freelance photographer from Cambodia days.My friend was a swift boat officer during the Cambodian invasion and dropped the shooter off on the banks of the Mekong near Neak Leaong in May of 1970. He took a picture of the fellow, who had two Nikons and was looking for "the action." If you send me a return e-mail at my address (above) I can send you the picture of him, which, I'm afraid leaves something to be desired. Nonetheless, I'm hoping it can ring some bells. All best/Guy

Best regards,

Carl

Hi Jim —

I appreciate your kind words. As requested… the film I put together remembering my father, Stanley Karnow.

So I am in Hue right now. I hired an excellent guide to take me up to Khe San yesterday. He started telling me about the war. I realized after several minutes that I recognized the words he was saying. I just read these exact words the day before in my father’s book. This gentleman had memorized entire passages of "Vietnam: a history." Dad would have gotten a kick out of that. :)

Hi!
I'm in Hoi an now, but yesterday went by your sister's exhibit in Hanoi and lucked out in timing- she was there and I briefly introduced myself to her but she was about to be interviewed by some Vietnamese tv so we hustled out quickly.
I just watched the film you made of your dad - extraordinary.
Arriving in HCMC on Saturday afternoon and there for just shy of a week- maybe we'll meet up. I'm with my kids so we are taking things pretty slow and easy- staying at the Rex.
Enjoy your tour of the countryside!

Well, who'd have ever thought of doing this ?

Grab your Social Security payments and retire to Vietnam.

Perhaps we should get a Real Estate Briefing as part of the upcoming
"Foreign Press Week" ion Saigon. Plenty of properties about.
