It was great catching up with Ron Yates, ex-Chicago Tribune, in SoCal last month and here's the latest - and most powerful yet - of his annual recollection of the Fall of Saigon.  Gut-wrenching, I've told him.  Do take the time to read this.

Best,

Carl

We’ve lost another friend, Barry Hillenbrand, Time magazine correspondent in Vietnam in the early 70s. Family and friends gathered in suburban Maryland last weekend for a memorial where we heard recollections of his many exploits and interests, among them classical music, Christmas tree decoration, and Ethiopia (before Time, he served there as a Peace Corps volunteer). In Vietnam Barry married the inestimable Nguyen Thi Phuong Nga, who oversaw the memorial with their son Kim and daughter-in-law Jessie. Barry also served with Time in Boston, Bahrain, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo and London.
Here’s a full obit:
He retired to Washington DC, where I was lucky to resume a long friendship with this always cheerful, always upbeat guy. He was 84. Pneumonia was the culprit. Rest in peace, Barry.
