Historically, Urdu is associated with the Muslims region of Hindustan. The Urdu language received recognition when the British replaced the Persian and local official languages of North Indian (Jammu and Kashmir) state with the Urdu and English in 1837.Origin of Urdu Language

There are between 60 and 70 million native speakers of Urdu. There were 52 million in India per the 2001 census, some 6% of the population; approximately10 million in Pakistan or 7.57% per the 1998 census; and several hundred thousand in the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, United States, and Bangladesh. However, a knowledgeof Urdu allows one to speak with far more people than that, because Hindustani, of which Urdu is one variety, is the fourth most commonly spoken language in theworld, after Mandarin, English, and Spanish. Because of the difficulty in distinguishing between Urdu and Hindi speakers in India and Pakistan, as well asestimating the number of people for whom Urdu is a second language, the estimated number of speakers is uncertain and controversial.Official status
Urdu is the national and one of the two official languages of Pakistan, along with English, and is spoken and understood throughout the country. Only7.57% of Pakistanis have Urdu as their mother language, but Urdu is understood all over Pakistan. It is used in education, literature, office and courtbusiness. It holds in itself a repository of the cultural and social heritage of the country. Although English is used in most elite circles, and Punjabihas a plurality of native speakers, Urdu is the national language of Pakistan. In practice English is used instead of Urdu in the higher echelons of government.Urdu is also one of the officially recognized languages in India and has official language status in the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Telangana, Jammu andKashmir and the national capital, New Delhi.

  • How to type in Urdu using English Keyboard - QWERTY keyboard? To start typing in Urdu, just type a word as it is pronounced in English. This would then be transliterated into Urdu. For E.g. if you type then it would be transliterated into .

A translation tells you the meaning of words in another language. For E.g the translation of would be in Urdu. You can use various online tool for translating word, sentence and phrase from English to Urdu for FREE. Some of the popular translation tool are Google Translator, Bing Translator for FREE.

On the other hand, transliteration software works on phonetics. A transliteration doesn't tell you the meaning of the words but it helps you pronounce them. What you type in Roman script is converted in Urdu script. For E.g. typing will be converted into .

Therefore, we can say, transliteration changes the letters from one alphabet into the similar-sounding characters of another alphabet. This makes it the simplest and fastest method of typing in Urdu without practising any Urdu Keyboard. You can either use Google Input Tool for FREE.

Whenever I start typing in Urdu keyboard and press spacebar, it behave like I press the number button at the bottom left corner. This only happens in IPad. iPhone is working fine. I reinstalled the keyboard many times and even after a few updates the issue remains same. I am experiencing this for over a year.

When I tap the space bar, I get the space but to type the next word I have to change the buttons back to urdu alphabets from urdu numbers every time I tap spacebar. You can imagine like, I type a word... then when I tap spacebar, iPad add a space but keyboard buttons change to urdu numbers.... So I have to extra tap the number key (botton left) after every tap of spacebar and before every next word.

i have found a new development in the issue. i usually use urdu keyboard while using twitter. it does the error while using twitter and after that it does the same in all apps until i restart ipad. adter restart keyboard works fine until i try to use in twitter.

I use to work a lot with the Urdu language in my office. I got some homework and I tried to type some Urdu in LibreOffice but the keyboard layout is completely changed. I can't find many of the symbols on the keyboard and there are some Urdu words on the wrong buttons.

I have 3 languages installed in my pc ENGLISH-ARABIC & URDU
while using english all keyboard shortcuts works fine but when i change the keyboard to arabic or urdu or any other language keyboard shortcuts such as ctrl+A, ctrl+C, ctrl+V and other common shortcuts stops working in photoshop cc...whereas they works fine with illustrator cc....whereas these shortcuts were working fine somedays ago...m not sure what went wrong and they stops working now ...plz help.

After trying multiple stuff, I figured out that keyboard shortcuts with the arabic language selected will only work if I had the "Windows Display Language" set to English (United States). The reason it stopped was because I had changed it to English (UK), because I use want the date format DD/MM/YYYY (THE RIGHT WAY, Obviously).

Tip: If you want to set display language to US and keep the regional format as UK without having 2 english keyboards, then just add it through the control panel (the old thing), not through "setting".

While most who grow up in Pakistan speak a local language as their native tongue, Ahmed spoke Urdu during his childhood in Lahore. He hopes the keyboard can help better represent non-Western languages in technology.

When he began the project three years ago, Ahmed faced early challenges with displaying the keyboard properly: Urdu contains 39 letters written in Arabic script, making it difficult to fit on a smartphone screen designed for the 26-letter Roman alphabet.
