Earlier today, leading appropriators announced a bipartisan omnibus agreement to fund the federal government through September 30, 2022. The agreement would extend the WIC benefit bump for the duration of the fiscal year, providing enhanced fruit and vegetable benefits to more than 4.75 million women and children participating in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). Before the WIC benefit bump was implemented in April 2021, children received only $9/month, and women received only $11/month for fruits and vegetables. Children now receive $24/month, pregnant and postpartum participants receive $43/month, and breastfeeding participants receive $47/month, reflecting 50 percent of recommended intake according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGAs).
Since April 2021, more than 4.75 million women and children participating in WIC have received enhanced fruit and vegetable benefits in accordance with science-based recommendations. The WIC benefit bump has resulted in more than triple the amount of fruit and vegetable purchases, a greater variety of produce redeemed by WIC families, and increased fruit and vegetable consumption for young children. Congress wisely extended this WIC benefit bump through the end of the fiscal year, providing an estimated $583 million in enhanced benefits that will stimulate local economies by bolstering retail grocery transactions and return investment up the food supply chain to American growers and producers.
The amount of fruits and vegetables you need in a day will vary based on your age, gender, medical history and lifestyle factors. The truth is, many Americans do not come close to their recommended daily requirement for healthy living (approximately 2 cups of fruit and vegetables per day). Rather than focusing on the negative, aiming to increase your fruit and vegetable intake every day will keep you on track towards your health goals, that fit your preferences.
In September 2023, Congress passed a Continuing Resolution to extend the increased fruit and vegetable benefits. Before the increase, the WIC food package included $9 for each child and $11 for each enrolled adult to spend on fruits and vegetables. WIC is now advocating to make the WIC benefit bump permanent and for Congress to provide the additional funding needed for the WIC program this fiscal year.
Every month, WIC families receive a cash value for fruits and vegetables as part of their WIC food package. Each child and adult participating in WIC receives a cash value depending on their category listed above.
For example, if 1 breastfeeding parent and 3 eligible children are participating in WIC, the family will receive $130 ($52 + $26 + $26 + $26) each month with their WIC benefits for fruits and vegetables.

Unless Congress acts, participants will lose access to WIC's enhanced vegetables and fruits after September 30. Congress must sustain the enhanced WIC Cash Value Benefit through fiscal year 2023 and adequately fund WIC in order to support the long-term health of children.
