The Brain Bee is a live Q&A neuroscience competition for high schoolers. The Brain Bee motivates students to learn about the brain, captures their imaginations, and inspires them to pursue neuroscience-related careers in order to help treat and find cures for neurological and psychological disorders. The Brain Bee competition hosted by Rice University will consist of two rounds: the written round and an oral round. All participants will first take a written test, composed of multiple choice, True/False, and short answer questions. The top 10 students from the written round will then advance to the oral round, wherein they will compete for cash prizes and a chance to advance to the national competition. In addition to our competition, we will have guest speakers and exciting, interesting neuroscience demonstrations.


To help you better prepare for the competition, we are planning to host a free WORKSHOP on February 18th, 2023. We will be playing some themed jeopardy, watching some demonstrations, and reviewing general neuroscience information. All high school students interested in participating in the competition are welcome, but this opportunity is completely optional and not a prerequisite to the competition!


The right brain is emotional and the left brain is rational is one of the pillars of current neuroscience-infused psychotherapy wisdom. But to what extent is this claim true? Ana (a psychotherapist) and Mike (a neuroscientist) will be locking horns with this narrative that runs deep in therapy. Is this view supported by modern neuroscience? If not, what are the implications for therapy? If this view is not fully accurate, what evidence supports the functional lateralization of the two hemispheres and how can it be useful for psychotherapy


More broadly, we will discuss the usefulness of simplified narratives and shortcuts but also dangers and perils of oversimplifications of neuroscience concepts. We will teach you how to avoid these dangers and sharpen your critical eye for spotting them.

Ana is a psychotherapist working in private practice in the picturesque town of Ramsbottom, north of Manchester. Ana is passionate about combining neuroscience and psychotherapy. She spends much time pondering and discussing related topics with her colleagues.


Ana has a background in science and holds a PhD in Computational Biology. Before transitioning to psychotherapy, Ana worked as a scientist in a research lab at Manchester University. With the neuroscientist Dr. Michael Tranter, Ana created Neuroscience & Psychotherapy, where they promote the cross-talk between the two disciplines.


In her free time, if she is not geeking out on the latest affective neuroscience book or podcast while running in the hills, Ana is probably spending time with her little boy and/or trying to reach inner peace using mindful meditation.


Mike, originally from the UK, is neuroscientist and best-selling author, who now resides in San Diego, California. His research interests focus on decision making in the brain, particularly in mental illness. His passion for science communication and encouraging scientists and non-scientists alike, to follow their curiosity, is a constant source of energy and joy, along with his dog/best friend.

Faster than ever, neuroscience is generating vast amounts of data that await cross-referencing, comparison, integration and interpretation in the endeavour to unravel the mechanisms of the brain. The complex, diverse and distributed nature of these data requires the development of advanced neuroinformatics methodologies for databases and associated tools that are now beginning to emerge. This paper presents an overview of current issues in the representation, integration and analysis of neuroscience data from molecular to brain systems levels, including issues of implementation, standardization, management, quality control, copyright, confidentiality and acceptance. Particular emphasis is given to integrative neuroinformatics approaches for exploring structure-function relationships in the brain.


For instance, what is the "movement center" in the brain that is thought to degenerate in Parkinson's disease? How can chemical compounds in brain cells influence the emotions we feel? Why does injury at a particular site on the head leave some patients unable to recognize an arm or a leg as part of their own body? Neuroscience is the field of study that endeavors to make sense of such diverse questions; at the same time, it points the way toward the effective treatment of dysfunctions. The exchange of information among a half-dozen branches of science and the clinical practice of mental health have shaped a new scientific approach to the study of the brain.


The fruitfulness of this approach reaches far beyond the health care and research professions into most people's everyday lives. The research itself has a wide range of applications, from alleviating many hundreds of nervous and mental diseases to enriching the lives of the healthy. Key policymakers supported this research. The United States Congress in 1989 passed a resolution sponsored by Congressman Silvio Conte declaring the 1990s to be the Decade of the Brain. Following the official proclamation by President George Bush, the 1990 symposium on the Decade of the Brain attracted the participation of First Lady Barbara Bush, Secretary of Health and Human Services Louis W. Sullivan, Science Adviser to the President D. Allan Bromley, Congressman Conte, Senator Pete V. Domenici, and others.


At the beginning of the 1990s, neuroscience combines mature theory, lively new possibilities for investigation, and technology that can yield information unheard of even a few years ago: the genetic markers for an inherited predisposition toward some mental disorder, or the intimate structure, down to the individual molecules, of a receptor in the brain for a particular chemical compound, or medical images that convey the flow of energy in different areas while the brain manages such tasks as reading and thinking. The end of the decade may see the picture more richly detailed in some areas and changed almost beyond recognition in others.
