I am curious to know your logic behind this whole woman thing though... I know it was brought up in another thread, but it never got answered.

What is the main reason you are looking for a woman to host?

is it sex appeal?
why not someone with knowledge of golf?
why not anyone with a passion for golf or an exciting video-presence?

This may not be the best place to cast for attractive female models, although I guess it couldn't hurt.

You should try some of these for casting:
http://mandy.com/
http://onemodelplace.com/
http://craigslist.com

Is knowledge of golf a prerequisite?
I have a couple female golfer friends back in Indiana that I could forward this to, if so.
You would have to be the judge of their h0ttness.

I can put on a pretty good girly voice, and I know that golf involves
a club, a ball and a hole. I'm also an equal opportunity employee.

Comon you guys, quit being so coy. You know why they want a "vivacious, hot, attractive" woman. There are plenty of examples of how this model works. It's a TV thing that's spreading to videoblogging. It's all about reaching that target demographic.

One thing I've learned about working at an organization where most men
are over 40... they love being in the company of a young woman. My
bet is that this video-podcast will cater to middle age men... so I
can understand their marketing strategy for looking for a young
attractive woman.

Besides, don't men eventually lose the whole boob fascination eventually?

I'm not sure this is a "TV thing", but rather a human thing.

Most people (both men and women) find women much more appealing to
look at than a man. A sweet voice and smooth skin is easier to
"relate" to than a deep voice coming out of a hairy being.

Of course, there are always exceptions but this is the general theory
for radio, print and TV. Hence why most advertising is done w/ women
models rather than men.

Josh, you say fight the boob, I say embrace the boob.

Boob marketing is a fact of life.

If I were running a golf show, a hot young lady might be a necessity. I don't know how many of you golf, but I have been on several occasions, and one of the highlights of the day is 4 guys chatting up the beer cart girl.

Now, I'm not sure if it's the beer or the girl, but if I were running a golf show, you can bet I would be looking for an attractive host. I would be racking my brain to figure out how to deliver streaming beer over a T1.

Let's rephrase the original proposal for what it is:

Can anyone out there help me with this? ....... We are looking to hire a
an object that is sexually arousing to our main demographic to host our show avout golf. What would be the most effective way to spread the word about this opportunity to continue to treat women as objects, use their bodies as marketing tools, and perpetuate this practice in new forms of media? Or do you know anyone who might be interested in selling their good looks for financial gain?

You're taking me way out of context.  I was just trying to say that a tech group isn't the place to cast for actors or actresses.  I would have said the same about a post seeking an attractive male model.

I hate having to defend myself about shit like this.  Funnytheworld, eh?

Josh, this is a little unfair. Sian has a marketing plan for his site
and simply asked for help finding a "video podcast hostess".

Rather than being freindly and helpful, many users would rather flame
his business plan. That is not very communal.

Adam Quirk was the only one who provided a helpful response by
providing the following sites.

Why try to make this into some big "women as objects" argument?

It is his site and he knows what he wants. Making Sian look like some
sexist person trying to exploit women is rude.

I highly doubt anything said about women in advertising will change
the fact that women "sell" to more people than men.

Perfect response. It provides a valid lead to the question... and
anyone who reads between the lines well see your opinion.

I want to hear your opinions!... but it is sad to see an innocent
question/person get flamed. It proves yet another example of why
newbies may not post here.

If you or I had asked the question, we may be able to take the heat
since we know the regulars here. However, for a new person to get
crap from multiple people is the quickest way to lose a member.

For what it's worth, since this thread has totally gone awry anyway...I don't think it's boobs that are the offensive thing here.  I am a big fan of boobs myself....and all them other parts.

It's the "we've got a show that needs a face, or something in front of it...talking"...."I know, let's get a hottie"...as some have mentioned, that's their prerogative, if that's what they want, I guess that's what they want.

I (as I am assuming Josh was) was surprised that here we have this new media, this new chance to try to avoid the pitfalls of traditional media and we have those who are going for the easy hook...skin, sex, whatever.

Personally, it would be great to watch a vodcast, episodic style videoblog that didn't have the trophy hottie...if for no other reason than to prove to some women that we do actually watch for the content.

Pitfalls? Many "shows" are built with the intended goal of getting a
large viewership. Are they in the wrong for using a proven method of

I have fallen into this trap myself, I have a trophy hottie on my
vlog, his name is Al Lien. Now tell me he's not sexy--and he always
shows his nipples.

I have to add one thing. I am a woman. I consider myself a feminist. But I still think that this thread is too funny.

Men are very simple creatures - it's a fact of life.  I interact with lots of high level execs. And let me tell you weather a guy is 14 or 67, blue collar or highly educated, he's got a soft spot for pretty women.

Naturally, there are business decisions that work but are unethical.

Why are you generalizing our culture's devaluation of masculinity as a broad human condition? The ancient Greeks, for instance...

Pitfalls?  Many "shows" are built with the intended goal of getting a
large viewership.

Of course, or they wouldn't be putting the effort into creating it.  The effort of creating content that is compelling.  Some take the high road, they focus on the content, not the fancy wrapping.

Are they in the wrong for using a proven method of
marketing?  It is a business decision and that is it.  Again, most

I can't find anyone else that is more responsible for it.

people like it and it works.

Yup, people love it, especially those young girls who are growing up in a world that tells them that they can't be famous, or on tv, or such things unless they are 'hot'.  They love it while they loathe themselves when they look in the mirror and compare themselves to what traditional media has taught us women should look like....yeah, they love it ;)

I am not debating the power of sex to sell, not debating whether women are nice to look at either....
I am not even debating whether boobs are cool or not (they are of course...I am close personal friends with a certain pair actually)

My point is that regardless of how powerful sex can be as a sales tool, as a hook...why do we need to perpetuate it?  Especially in a time when we as content creators have the greatest power.

Why point at stats and figures and say 'hey it works...' instead of saying 'hm...that really doesn't work, how can we do it different'?

You know what Devlon, I'm not surprised at all. This is a subject that I've thinking and talking about for a while now. Here we have this new medium and all people want to do is copy what's come before.

Anyway - this is what the panel I'm organizing for vloggercon will be about. Should be interesting.

Yeah, I guess It's because it's easy, it's proven, as Matt pointed out.  Instead of coming up with creative ways to get someone's attention we slip into the 'norm' instead of blazing a trail.

It would be great to overhear 'watercooler' talk about the latest video because of the message (remember that, the message?) or how it was presented not because of the size of the rack the prominant female had.

Anyway - this is what the panel I'm organizing for vloggercon will be about. Should be interesting.

Crazy how an simple question of "where can i find a hostess" turns
into an all-day discussion of sexism in media.

Of course no body should stop that conversation for people who want to
argue theories, but will new people ever post again after igniting
themselves on fire?

Most likely a person will revert to being a "lurker" and not subject
themselves to the heat again. Don't get me wrong, I love this group
and enjoy hearing the opinions of others. (If you haven't noticed
yet, I like to vocalize my opinions too.)

But there is a side-effect to having such an intense group. It
doesn't feel as warm and cozy as it once did.

Maybe we can all bring matches and rocks to the Vloggercon panel so
that we can really burn and stone the people we disagree with.

Just kidding... hopefully there is still a sense of humor.

Crazy how an simple question of "where can i find a hostess" turns
into an all-day discussion of sexism in media.

But that's exactly where it starts Matt.

Of course no body should stop that conversation for people who want to
argue theories, but will new people ever post again after igniting
themselves on fire?

I thought it was a very tame conversation.  I was being very polite :) ...maybe a bit smart-assed, but that's just my way.

I thought it was a very good discussion, I'd hate to exclude anyone from it.  I think it's an important issue that bears a ton of discussion.

People weighed in on one side, and some on the other...this is how discussion works.  It would have been great to have the person that posted the question participate more.  Maybe there could have been ways that we as a group could have suggested to get the viewership they want without depending on window dressing?

Maybe we can all bring matches and rocks to the Vloggercon panel so
that we can really burn and stone the people we disagree with.

meh that'd just get too messy after a while.

My problem wasn't with the original person that posted the question (sorry can't remember who that was) but the school of thought that the idea was coming from.  That school of thought desrves all the rocks and fire it can get.

Just kidding... hopefully there is still a sense of humor.

Besides, don't men eventually lose the whole boob fascination eventually?

Jumping in a bit late with my 2 cents on this subject. But it looks like we’ll be seeing more posts for good-looking, sexy male hosts soon enough. Seems that as women are becoming more financially independent, they are going for looks more and more.

And on another note, the acting profession is the only one where it is acceptable to specify a specific gender, age, and yes, even attractiveness level.  For all other positions, it is illegal here in Canada, and looks like the US too.   http://www.eeoc.gov/facts/qanda.html

Posts about content and aestetics are most welcome. Posts about politics

Not in Italy. Here it's both legal and accepted for a job announcement to specify gender, age (young, so they can pay you less) and "bella presenza".

I suspect it's going to play out both ways as "citizen video" continues to grow.

1. Yes, the medium will be invaded by the usual pretty people because all humans are "lookist" - part of that is genetic and will never be entirely eradicated, part of it is culture - so there's some hope.

2. However, because we can self-publish, Just Plain Folks can also put themselves in front of the camera and some of them will have a hook that draws us in and we'll watch them even if they aren't pretty. I hope that as a result we'll all subconsciously get used to the idea that you don't have to be gorgeous to be worth watching, and lookism will tone down in the general culture. After all, we already watch lots of famous people who aren't particularly attractive because they are instead funny or talented.

There still is a sense of humor--and I'm one of the ones that has it.

I'm another female who is inspired by this discussion rather than
    humiliated or enflamed by it.

I think Josh has a lot of valid points--I agree with what he is
*thinking,* but I think he may not be getting it out/slash/across in
    the greatest of ways.

Sex sells, sure--because men stare at the boobs--while women stare at
the price. That's why men as hosts of a product don't matter. ;)
