MacOS 12.6.3 (Monterey) Cannot Install .pkg files

The directions to update downloadhelper state to just download the .pkg file, then double-click on it. This results in the message "“net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.6.3.pkg” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software." A smaller message in the same pane reads, "This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information."

I had just installed LibreWolf (Mozilla FF Based) and was having the same issues as all of you above.  I did notice that when one downloads the net.downloadhelper.coapp v1.66  and installs it (for macos), the installer .pkg actually installs the extensions/NativeMessagingHosts folder containing the net.downloadhelper.coapp.json not just for mozilla, but also for chrome, and edge as well.  So I dragged the Library/Application Support/Mozilla/Extensions/NativeMessagingHosts folder (containing net.downloadhelper.coapp.json), all the way down to the Users/Applications/Library/Application Support/librewolf folder and dropped it in.

Bingo! everything worked from then on.  So for whatever flavor of Mozilla Firefox based browser you are using this fix should work. Just be sure to copy it to the Users/Applications/Library/Application Support folder of the particular app you are using.

Just ctrl-click it again and select "Open", you will get another scare screen but "open" will be one of the buttons, click that and it will install as normal.
