OS & Hardware:
Opensuse 15.2 Linux x86_64 on glibc 2.26
Running on 12-core Intel processor,
KDE Plasma Version: 5.18.6
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.71.0
Qt Version: 5.12.7
Kernel Version: 5.3.18-lp152.81-preempt
OS Type: 64-bit
Processors: 12 × Intel® Core™ i7-3960X CPU @ 3.30GHz
Memory: 31.3 GiB of RAM

(No shortage of resources.)
VDH set to update automatically, running most recent updated version.

Looking on site:
https://github.com/mi-g/vdhcoapp/releases/
containing
Packages for amd64-various-glibc-versions
Packages for i386-various-glibc-versions

Question:
Are these packages specifically designed to run on amd-based or
intel-based processors?  Would I choose one
based on my hardware being amd or intel, or
based on being 32-bit or 64 bit?

(64-bit OSes generally still run 32-bit software)

Picked net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.6.3-1_i386-glibc-2.23.tar.gz to install.
Still no coapp

went to:
https://www.downloadhelper.net/install-coapp?browser=firefox
then:
https://www.downloadhelper.net/install-coapp?browser=firefox#other-installers

Found: (had to copy page & paste to .txt file to read the tiny
glibc and SHA lines at the bottom of each entry, in grey on white,
virtually unreadable on the web page.  I completely missed those  lines
up until last night.)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next:
I Installed the coapp using targz system-wide install:
# sudo tar xf net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.6.3-1_amd64.tar.gz -C /usr/local
# sudo /usr/local/net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.6.3/bin/net.downloadhelper.coapp-linux-64 install --system

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I found FOUR "native-messaging-hosts", in
etc/chromium, etc/opt/chrome, usr/lib/mozilla, and usr/lib64/mozilla.

{
    "name": "net.downloadhelper.coapp",
    "description": "Video DownloadHelper companion app",
    "path": "/usr/local/net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.6.3/bin/net.downloadhelper.coapp-linux-64",
    "type": "stdio",
    "allowed_extensions": [
        "weh-nat...@downloadhelper.net",
        "{b9db16a4-6edc-47ec-a1f4-b86292ed211d}"
    ]
}

I made them all identical, on the theory that no matter which one VDH found,
the path is the same.  Probably a mistake...?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think it's fairly apparent that I'm flailing, haven't a clue what I'm doing here,
am open to any & all suggestion & advice.  So far, complete failure to get the
coapp recognized, much less running.

Mig - HALP!

amd64 is for 64 bits PC processors, i386 for 32 bits PC processors, regardless of whether they come from Intel or AMD.

If you really need to read the SHA signature, exporting  the page to a .txt file, is certainly not the easiest way.  Use CTRL+ several times to zoom in, or CTRL+mouse wheel up, or double-click on the text and middle-click somewhere to paste the text, or mouse select then CTRL+C CTRL+V, ...

To get the coapp recognized, DO NOT edit the net.downloadhelper.coapp.json manifest files manually. Just remove ALL those files and execute the coapp once as stated in the documentation. The files will be created at the correct location with the right content.

I don't seem to have a "native-messaging-hosts" file.  Using openSUSE LEAP 15.2 here, trying
to install VDH "system-wide".  Does anyone know where I can find a "native-messaging-hosts"
file and where should it be located (installed?).  It does not exist on this computer, and
searching only returns mixed results - when someone finds an answer that works for him, he
says "I found it" but doesn't say what he found.

O.K.: I have manually created a "native-messaging-hosts" file in .mozilla - Can anyone point me to an
example of what that directory should contain?

Also:
What exactly should this line do?

# sudo /usr/local/net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.6.3/bin/

I don't see that it specifies any particular action, just a location.  What am I missing, since my konsole
tells me it's not a  command?

Again, please,

I would not recommend modifying those files by yourself but if you feel in a hacking mood, go ahead !

Just understand that we cannot provide to your experiments. Good luck.

Mig - I'm not in either a "hacking mood" nor prone to experiment.  I'm punting here.
I'm trying to get a program to work that simply doesn't.
The program used to work, and I loved it - but now, no matter what I've tried, it either doesn't install or if it does it wants a glibc it never asked for before.
The installation script doesn't install it.  I'm trying anything I can with my limited knowledge and am only achieving frustration.
The most recent co-app I've tried is the 64-bit version with an earlier version of glibc (glibc 2.23) than the one I have (glibc-2.26).
The install script doesn't seem to work for me.  The second line of the script -
/usr/local/net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.6.3/bin/
brings this result:
-bash: /usr/local/net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.6.3/bin/: Is a directory
What else can I do?
I can't be the only one having this kind of problem ... I really want to get it working again.

What install command exactly are you trying to run ?

It should be:
sudo /usr/local/net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.6.3/bin/net.downloadhelper.coapp-linux-64 install --system

There is absolutely no reason this command gets you -bash: /usr/local/net.downloadhelper.coapp-1.6.3/bin/: Is a directory

Mig: Wanted to update you on this install of the coapp:

I Went to:
https://www.downloadhelper.net/install-coapp?browser=firefox
and under "Other system installers" had to expand the image (Ctrl-+)
to see the small, gray-on-gray "glibc: 2.31", and found the one
that said "glibc: 2.23" since my  opensuse LEAP 15.2 uses glibc 2.26.

"Extra step required to complete install" brought the install scripts
as intended - and that's where I went wrong.

"Ctrl-+" expanded the scripts but not the dark, gray bars, and
"Ctrl-C" only copied what was visible in the bars, meaning all but
the rightmost last few words of the script, the "install --system" part.

So when I figured that out and "did it right", I have since downloaded
and converted a video using VDH for the first time since your "upgrade"
to Ubuntu with the "upgraded" glibc -- HOORAY!  IT WORKS!

So indeed the answer to the glibc problem is solved - the OS you're
working with MUST have a newer version of glibc than the version of
the coapp, period, full stop.  If you're on linux, and your glibc version
is lower than the one the coapp is built on, it won't work.

Mig - THANK YOU for your amazing program.  The more I look at it the
more impressed I am with what it does, including the various adjustments
that can be made in the settings.

So now it's back to the battle with the video hosts....
