I decided to try this again, but this time, I was logged into my Google account. This is
a free Google account, not a paid YouTube account. Once again, I downloaded the default
variant presented by VDH. Curiously, the variant claimed it was 640x360 before I
launched the download. But after the download started, the VDH blue dot status menu
claimed its resolution was 768x480. That was the resolution of the downloaded file as
reported by Windows Properties. However, that number is moot because this file had no
video track. It was, as it was on my previous test, an audio-only file. I emphasize,
this download completed successfully while I was logged into my Google account.
As an aside, the download speed as reported in the Windows Resource Monitor said I was
getting about 34,000 bytes per second service from YouTube. That is disgusting. But it
is in line with their usual policy of throttling. They slow down the download to make it
last about half the duration of the clip. This clip is 3:15 & this download took about
1:30, give or take.
Then I tried the evasive maneuver of changing the resolution to 1920x1080, what YouTube
labels as 1080p. This download was getting about 790,000 bytes per second service. But
because of the fact that this download actually included a video track, the file was
bigger, 79.9M vs 3.22M for the audio-only file. But like I said above, this speed is
calculated to force the download to take about half the duration of the clip. So once
again, the download lasted about 1:30, same as the other one. Even though 790,000 bytes
per second might sound fantastic in comparison to the 34,000 I was getting moments
earlier, it's still lousy. My Internet connection supports up to 50 million bytes per
second. So YouTube was using barely 1.5% of the available bandwidth. I am considerably
less than impressed. In any case, this download once again succeeded as it did
yesterday, giving me a file that played both video & audio in VLC for the full duration
of 3:15. Strangely, the resolution of the file was 1728x1080. This is the resolution
reported by Windows Properties, VLC Media Information, & ffprobe. That's a bit weird,
even though the gear inside the YouTube player claimed it was 1080p. But I guess
1728x1080 is the resolution the author used to create this content. Once again, I
emphasize that this download completed successfully while I was logged into my Google
account.
I should note that the audio-only download generated 3 Short Content errors in the VDH
error log, & the video+audio download generated 2 Short Content errors. I really wish I
knew what these errors are reporting because the downloads completed perfectly. As
usual, I just deleted the errors from the VDH log & pretended they never happened.
I don't know what it is about being logged in that causes problems for some users. Maybe
it's only Mac users who have this problem. Maybe it's only people with YouTube Premium
accounts who have problems. I honestly don't know. All I can say is I have no problems
downloading from YouTube when I'm logged in there on my Windows 7 system. I have a vague
recollection that at some point in the past I was also experiencing the problem when I
was logged in. But there's been several new versions of VDH since then. Maybe VDH
7.6.3a6 beta cures the problem. It's worth investigating the beta to see if it makes any
difference for you. In any case, I am hardly ever logged into Google when I visit
YouTube. It's not a requirement of YouTube so I generally don't bother, except in cases
like this, when I'm specifically testing something.
