I'm getting the following error constantly in FireFox 105.0.2 when attempting to download any YouTube video.

I'm on macOs 12.6 (21G115) with a paid VDH license. Have had this issue for a couple of months now and keep getting frustrating and finding alternative downloading service. Would like to solve this as I've paid for the license and I do like VDH.

I assume the first two errors cause the final two. How can this be solved?

Here are the four errors:

Error 1:

First if you're signed into YouTube with your account I suggest to sign out. Also try experimenting with different resolutions , you won't always get
the resolution you want on YouTube.

It's a good thing your error message included the URL of the video you were having trouble with.  The VDH error messages do not always include such a URL.  Be sure in future that any problem you report includes the URL.

So I visited the YouTube page & this is what I got:

#01.jpg

It is odd that the page opened with the video claiming it had reached time index 2:28 even though I had not hit the play button.

I downloaded the indicated variant & it seemed to go fine.  But when I played it, it was audio without video.  This is a problem that people encounter regularly on YouTube.  It is annoying but there is nothing VDH can do about this, apparently.  The usual recommendation is to either look on the VDH menu for something that looks like it might be the video track for this or try another resolution.  I did not see anything on the VDH menu that might have been a video without audio of the right duration.  The key is the right duration.  If it doesn't say it's of the duration of the video, which in this case is 3:15, then you're not interested in it.  So I changed the resolution, using the gear icon within the player, as indicated in this next image.  Note the HD tag on the gear icon, a tag that is missing in my first image above.  This image shows me downloading the 1080p resolution of this video.  That was the new resolution I chose.

#02.jpg

This turned out to be the full video consisting of both a video track & an audio track.

I am running Windows 7 64-bit, Firefox 105.0.2 64-bit, licensed VDH 7.6.3a6 beta, CoApp 1.6.3.  The fact that we both have licenses is probably entirely irrelevant.  This behavior of YouTube has nothing to do with the VDH license.  And I emphasize, this is a behavior of YouTube.  VDH is the victim here.  It downloads what it can see.  If YouTube doesn't present it, VDH can't download it.  It appears that in this case, switching to a different resolution fixed the problem.

The Short Content errors are bogus in every respect.  I get 2 of those with every stinking download I do from YouTube.  I got 2 of them with my successful download of the audio-only video.  And I got 2 more of them with my successful download of the video that had audio.  You'll note in my images that I had sent the VDH errors to the trash.  My images do not show any red dot & a number of errors.  I always simply delete those error reports.  My downloads always succeed despite the fact that I always get those errors.

Aside from the fact we're not running the same operating system, it might be the case that you are not running the latest VDH beta.  Unlike most software, VDH betas are usually not so much experimental as they are simply early releases of features between major releases of VDH.  We don't get new VDH betas every night or even every week.  There's usually a gap of several months between new VDH betas.  I always run the latest beta.  In the case of 7.6.3a6, it cures some problems with the detection of the end of livestreams.  To my eye, this beta is production level software, equivalent to a general availability public release.  You ought to try it to see if it makes any difference.

Did you notice the &t=148s  on the end of the url , that indicates a time in seconds so that's why it started at 2.28.

Thank you, mjs, and Wild Willy for your excellent help and suggestions.  It was mjs' initial suggestion that has solved it.  I just had to ensure I was signed out, and the errors disappeared.  Strange that this has not been a problem for years of us, and it suddenly started happening. I guess YouTube are constantly doing things on their end that we have no insight about.

Thank you both again.

I decided to try this again, but this time, I was logged into my Google account. This is
a free Google account, not a paid YouTube account. Once again, I downloaded the default
variant presented by VDH. Curiously, the variant claimed it was 640x360 before I
launched the download. But after the download started, the VDH blue dot status menu
claimed its resolution was 768x480. That was the resolution of the downloaded file as
reported by Windows Properties. However, that number is moot because this file had no
video track. It was, as it was on my previous test, an audio-only file. I emphasize,
this download completed successfully while I was logged into my Google account.

As an aside, the download speed as reported in the Windows Resource Monitor said I was
getting about 34,000 bytes per second service from YouTube. That is disgusting. But it
is in line with their usual policy of throttling. They slow down the download to make it
last about half the duration of the clip. This clip is 3:15 & this download took about
1:30, give or take.

Then I tried the evasive maneuver of changing the resolution to 1920x1080, what YouTube
labels as 1080p. This download was getting about 790,000 bytes per second service. But
because of the fact that this download actually included a video track, the file was
bigger, 79.9M vs 3.22M for the audio-only file. But like I said above, this speed is
calculated to force the download to take about half the duration of the clip. So once
again, the download lasted about 1:30, same as the other one. Even though 790,000 bytes
per second might sound fantastic in comparison to the 34,000 I was getting moments
earlier, it's still lousy. My Internet connection supports up to 50 million bytes per
second. So YouTube was using barely 1.5% of the available bandwidth. I am considerably
less than impressed. In any case, this download once again succeeded as it did
yesterday, giving me a file that played both video & audio in VLC for the full duration
of 3:15. Strangely, the resolution of the file was 1728x1080. This is the resolution
reported by Windows Properties, VLC Media Information, & ffprobe. That's a bit weird,
even though the gear inside the YouTube player claimed it was 1080p. But I guess
1728x1080 is the resolution the author used to create this content. Once again, I
emphasize that this download completed successfully while I was logged into my Google
account.

I should note that the audio-only download generated 3 Short Content errors in the VDH
error log, & the video+audio download generated 2 Short Content errors. I really wish I
knew what these errors are reporting because the downloads completed perfectly. As
usual, I just deleted the errors from the VDH log & pretended they never happened.

I don't know what it is about being logged in that causes problems for some users. Maybe
it's only Mac users who have this problem. Maybe it's only people with YouTube Premium
accounts who have problems. I honestly don't know. All I can say is I have no problems
downloading from YouTube when I'm logged in there on my Windows 7 system. I have a vague
recollection that at some point in the past I was also experiencing the problem when I
was logged in. But there's been several new versions of VDH since then. Maybe VDH
7.6.3a6 beta cures the problem. It's worth investigating the beta to see if it makes any
difference for you. In any case, I am hardly ever logged into Google when I visit
YouTube. It's not a requirement of YouTube so I generally don't bother, except in cases
like this, when I'm specifically testing something.

Thanks again. I'm impressed with your dedication to investigate why things are not working!

You inspired me to install VDH 7.6.3a6 beta for FireFox, which I did successfully. My license was verified, and the companion app was found, as usual.  I also tried a new ISP, to rule out that variable.  And, I received the same errors when logged in.  YouTube seem to block the attempt - "Your client has issued a malformed or illegal request. That’s all we know".

I have YouTube Premium (via India, which means it costs a couple of dollars per month).

Very odd!

Well, that means the evidence points to the issue being with the YouTube premium service.
So weird that it turns out to be the problem. You can only hope that any content
available through premium is also available without it, which is likely not the case for
all content. Surely there is some content that you can see only when you are logged in
with your premium account. In that case, your only recourse will be a screen recording
application, OBS being one but there are others. That will be a less than optimal
solution but it's probably your only one. You might try fighting with trying to find the
information to get the content with ffnpeg. That is not the best way to do things. I've
detailed one way of dong that in my thread with the title "VDH can't download it? Maybe
ffmpeg can." in this forum. Search for that if you're interested. It's a last resort. I
don't recommend it. But if you're desperate, you might try it. It may fail as well
because of the security so that might just be a lot of work that ends in failure.
Obviously, I can't try it since I don't have a YouTube premium account. And no, I'm not
going to borrow yours.

Yes, that is what seems to be causing the problem.  It's odd that it has only just started happening this year - I've been using VDH with YouTube Premium for years without issue.  And thanks for the additional recommendation of other things to try.

However - I have a solution, from mjs' reply above, which is to simply use VDH while logged-out of YouTube. So I just open a new FireFox Private window, and download it from there.

One other thought occurs to me. Try turning off DRM support in the Firefox settings.
That's on the General tab of Firefox settings about 2/3 of the way down the page. Turn
that off & see if the content will play. In the case of content that is available when
you are not logged in, it's pretty much guaranteed to make no difference. If VDH can
download it when you're not logged in, it is obviously not protected by DRM. You'll have
to find something that is visible only when you're logged in with your premium account.
See if that is protected by DRM.

The error message you quote makes me think VDH would succeed if it passed your user ID &
password on the request. I don't know how to make VDH do such a thing. I do know how to
make ffmpeg pass user ID & password, & I cover that in my thread about using ffmpeg. But
that would be something to try only on content visible only to your premium account.
Stuff you can get simply by logging off would not be worth investigating. Just log off &
be happy it works that way.

YouTube regularly changes the way they do things. There have been plenty of times
reported in this forum when VDH suddenly quit working because YouTube moved the target
without warning. But they don't care about downloaders. We just have to roll with the
punches, something Michel has shown himself to be pretty good at. Other sites often
change their practices as well. I suppose they would call it progress. It's just the
way of things. It seems it matters not a bit what worked for years. It matters only
what works now. If what works now is logging off, so be it. Log off.

After some research, it seems there is no new YouTube Originals content that you cannot view on YouTube without having YouTube Premium or without being logged in. Aside from, perhaps, bought videos.  So, the method of using an Incognito/Private window is an effective solution.

Well if that's the case, why do you ever bother logging in to your YouTube Premium
account? I'm hoping you have a logical reason. I don't have such an account, as I've
said. So I have no idea what reasons there might be for logging in. I have a plain old
free Google account & I usually don't bother logging in with that. I send my posts to
this group via E-mail except when I'm doing a post like the one above that has text &
images interspersed. I'm sending this post via E-mail & I'm not logged on. So I'm
curious to know why you ever log on.

Because I never see a single ad on YouTube, it allows me to add videos to the “Offline Downloads” section of YouTube (that has been especially handy when I know I'll be in a place with terrible mobile internet reception, or on a plane), it synchronises my watch history across all my devices, and it gives me access to YouTube Music, meaning I don't have to waste money on other music services like Spotify or Apple Music. All that, and more, for $2 / month - well worth it. And I often upload videos to my account, something you can't do when not logged-in.  So, I'm logged-in 100% of the time when using YouTube.

I'm puzzled... if it allows you to download YT content, why use VDH at all?  (While I have a YT account, I don't have Premium).  I'm sure I'm being clueless somehow...

Sorry for the confusion. The "Downloads" feature of YouTube Premium can only be used in the Phone App (probably tablet also). It does not allow you to download videos to your computer or elsewhere. It only allows the video to be stored within the YouTube App, for playing within the YouTube App.
