It was previously possible to download videos from byutv.org, but it no longer is

As mentioned, I was able to download videos from byutv.org and did so about 15 times, but now VDH does not offer that option anymore.

The way the download worked was slightly different from how it happened on Youtube. Instead of seeing a list of different qualities and formats, VDH here offered only one option, and it almost behaved like an on-screen recording.
That is to say, I could not start the download and close the tab, I had to keep the video running, until the download was complete, which was about five minutes later (video length between 20 and 25 minutes). Then there was a 3-400MB file in the download folder and I could stop the video or close the tab even if only a fraction of the video had played.
If memory serves me right, I think the option in VDH had the extension .flv.

I was offline for a few weeks, so I cannot pinpoint if something on the website changed or in VDH. One thing is certain, I did not touch the settings in between.

I haven't been able to play a video from  byutv.org (maybe country restriction ?).

Anyway, if those videos are streamed in F4F, you should give a try with the latest VDH 6.0.0 development version available from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/video-downloadhelper/versions/ That has been some improvements for F4F decoding.

Otherwise, if the site moved to a streaming protocol like say RTMP, there is not much we can do, sorry.
