I am trying to download a video from youtube.  VDH downloads separate files named media-1.mp4 and media.tmp as though it's going to combine them into the final file, but it never actually combines them -- those files have been sitting in my Temp folder for hours.

If you tried to move or even simply open those files during the download/aggregation, some bad things happen like the one you describe. Look at the corresponding entry in the VDH main panel, you should see at what stage the operation is: downloading, aggregating, converting, ...

I did not try to move or open the files.  How long should I expect the aggregation to take?  Hours?  If I put the computer to sleep before it's finished, will that interrupt the process?

It should take a few seconds if you have a registered converter, a few minutes maximum otherwise. What does the progress bar says for the downloading/aggregating entry ?

I don't think I was able to see a progress bar in VDH.

During the operation, the entry description displays the stage "Downloading", "Aggregating" or "Converting". What was it ?

I'm having the same issue and have been since about December. :(

It does the download portion, but none of the aggregating or converting. It just stops.

Screencap attached. Using Firefox with VDH v5.6.1.

You should not care about what appears in the Firefox download manager. Just look at the progress bar and operation description in the VDH main panel.
Please make sure you are running ConvertHelper 3.2 from http://www.downloadhelper.net/data/ConvertHelperSetup-3.2.exe
